After about two miles we came in sight of the Chitral bridge, which had not been destroyed, and, soon after, of the fort, with the Union Jack still floating on one of the towers. We crossed the bridge, closed up the column on the other side, the buglers were sent to the front, and we marched on to the fort with as much swagger as we could put on.

I therefore at once ordered the band to play, as I determined to accept the carefully planned surprise as a compliment that I would return. The band struck up, the cymbals clashed, the big drum thundered, and the buglers blew their loudest, while the regimental drums rattled away as hard as the sticks could roll upon the skins.

"At the grave we turns in an' gives three cheers for King, an' three for Doc Peets; an' last we gives three more an' a tiger for the camp. The buglers cuts loose everythin' they knows, from the 'water- call' to the 'retreat, an' while the niggers is a-shovelin' in the sand we bangs away with our six-shooters for general results delightful.

The army was not accompanied by a pontoon train, and at that time the troops were not instructed in bridge building. To add to the embarrassment of the situation, the army was here, for the first time, threatened with opposition. Buglers, concealed from our view by the brush on the opposite side, sounded the "assembly," and other military calls.

Other Divisions were expected to come South, but for a short time the 50th occupied the unique position of being the only British troops in the Sixth French Army. In the camp at Arcis-le-Ponsart were all the battalions of the 151st Brigade, and the ceremony of Brigade guard mounting was revived. This took place daily in the centre of the village with the massed buglers and bands.

By the Friday evening so many presents had arrived four breastpins, two rings, six pocket-knives, three sets of Machzorim or Festival Prayer-books, and the like that his father barred up the door very carefully and in the middle of the night, hearing a mouse scampering across the floor, woke up in a cold sweat and threw open the bedroom window and cried "Ho! Buglers!"

But if the scene did not compare with the picture he had in his imagination of officers mounted upon spirited horses, buglers sounding calls, companies standing at attention there was a spirit of action and excitement in the air which made him rejoice.

The service was conducted by four chaplains of the Catholic, Anglican, Presbyterian, and Methodist persuasions and concluded with a performance of 'Abide with Me' the General's favourite hymn by a select company of Sudanese buglers. Every one agreed that General Gordon had been avenged at last. Who could doubt it?

The general rode along the line just before the Winchesters and nodded to them approvingly. He came so close that Dick saw the contraction of his face, and his eager burning look, as if the great moment had arrived. Suddenly, he raised his hand and the buglers blew the fierce notes of the charge.
