The tribes of Israel are scattered through the mountains like lost sheep, and from the remnant that dwells in Judea under the yoke of Rome neither star nor sceptre shall arise." "And yet," answered Artaban, "it was the Hebrew Daniel, the mighty searcher of dreams, the counsellor of kings, the wise Belteshazzar, who was most honoured and beloved of our great King Cyrus.
The captain of the guard hastened from the presence of the king to inform Daniel of his success. "Belteshazzar, the king grants thy petition, and thou art requested to appear before him." Daniel, with his usual calmness and dignity, walked into the presence of the king, while Arioch was beckoned to retire.
"Grant unto my brethren the permission to build their temple!" added Belteshazzar, who was the richest and most honorable and respected of the Jews yet remaining in Babylon; a man whom Cyrus had treated with much consideration, and of whom he had even taken counsel from time to time. "Will ye then be peaceable, if I grant your petition?" asked the king.
The king gave entertainments on a magnificent scale; and, in the midst of his dazzling splendor, the mournful predictions of Belteshazzar were well-nigh forgotten. Occasionally they would rush to the monarch's mind, but with a desperate effort they would be banished as troublesome intruders and unwelcome guests. The day was beautifully clear.
"Which will surely be found even to this day laid up in the archives of thy kingdom." "Find this decree and show it me, and I will not only allow the building to be continued, but will promote the same," answered the king; "for my father's will is as sacred to me as the commands of the gods." "Wilt thou allow search to be made in the house of the rolls at Ecbatana?" asked Belteshazzar.
I have been well pleased, from time to time, to learn of your amiable deportment and noble bearing. Justice requires me to say that a peculiar perfection has been visible in all your past performances; and now, Belteshazzar, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, youths of Judah, ye are, through the power and word of the king, elevated to share in all the immunities and privileges of Chaldean citizens.
'Let his portion be with the beasts, in the grass of the earth! What meaneth it? Why do I fear to call Belteshazzar first? Is it not best at once to know the worst? But let my Chaldeans have the first trial;" and the king called a young page into his presence. "Young man, where is thy father?" "My father is in the adjoining chamber, O king." "Call him hither without delay."
Now thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation thereof, forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation; but thou art able, for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee." Daniel was astonished, and his thoughts greatly troubled him. "Belteshazzar," said the king, "let not the dream or the interpretation thereof give thee pain or uneasiness."
Art thou not Belteshazzar, of the captivity of Judah, and art thou not numbered among the wise men?" "And what can be the nature of my offense?" asked the young Hebrew, nothing daunted. "If in anything I have offended, I ask not to be spared." "And hast thou not heard the decree?" "No new decree has reached my ears." "Then I shall communicate to Belteshazzar all I know concerning the matter."
I also sent thee messengers to announce that Daniel, surnamed Belteshazzar, who was Satrap of Media from the time of Cambyses, is dead; and I have buried him fittingly in a new tomb in the garden of the palace of Ecbatana."
