Baroncelli had revived to some extent the schemes of Rienzi, but had declared openly against papal rule. To oppose this new tribune, Albornoz conceived the project of using the influence of Rienzi, whose rule was now regretted by the populace that had previously deserted him.
"Nay," interrupted Innocent, "I have yet intelligence equally ominous. Rome, long in anarchy, seems now in open rebellion. The nobles sons of Belial! it is true, are once more humbled; but how? One Baroncelli, a new demagogue, the fiercest the most bloody that the fiend ever helped has arisen is invested by the mob with power, and uses it to butcher the people and insult the Pontiff.
The Pope had no sovereign rights, but only the ascendency inseparable from his wealth and from his position as Primate of Christendom. In attempting flight he was massacred by the mob, December, 1353. Some, however, have maintained that he was slain in combat with Rienzi; and others, by a confusion of dates, have made him succeed to Rienzi on the death of the latter.

Gaddo Gaddi was a painstaking worker in mosaic, executing some works on a small scale entirely in eggshells of varying tints. In the Baroncelli chapel in Florence is a painting by Taddeo Gaddi, in which occur the portraits of his father, Gaddo Gaddi, and Andrea Tafi. About this time the delightful mosaic at St. Clemente, in Rome, was executed.
