It was an act of bravado on my part to attempt to play the piano in the mood in which I found myself; and that I should have begun the opening phrase of Chopin's first Ballade, that composition so laden with formidable memories begun it without thinking and without apprehension showed how far I had lost my self-control.

I resist, though with difficulty, the temptation to point out in detail the interesting course of the composer's thoughts, and proceed at once to the coda which, palpitating and swelling with passion, concludes the fourth and, alas! last ballade. We have now passed in review not only all the compositions published by Chopin himself, but also a number of those published without his authorisation.

The ballades of olden times used to conclude with an envoi addressed to some powerful person and invariably beginning with King, Queen, Prince or Princess. But the poet was occasionally at a loss, for, as Theodore de Banville observes in his Petit traité de Poésie Française, "everybody has not a prince handy to whom to dedicate his ballade."

"Dead and gone!" as Andrew Lang re-echoes in a sweetly mournful ballade: Through the mad world's scene We are drifting on, To this tune, I ween, "They are dead and gone!"

For God's sake take good care of the manuscripts, do not squeeze, dirty, or tear them. To-morrow you will receive the Nocturne, and at the end of the week the Ballade and Fantasia; I cannot get my writing done sooner. Each of these things you will transcribe; your copies will remain in Paris.

She never realized before that there could be so much to a Brahms Intermezzo or a Chopin Ballade. At the end of her first year her American common-sense tells her that a plunge into the concert field is still dangerous.

I, on the contrary, do not know a single phrase of Chopin's works including even the freest among them in which the balloon of inspiration, as it moves through the air, is not checked by an anchor of rhythm and symmetry. Such passages as occur in the F minor Ballade, the B flat minor Scherzo the middle part the F minor Prelude, and even the A flat Impromptu, are not devoid of rhythm.

And it happened to him, he tells us in a ballade, to remember his happiness over there in the past; and he was both sad and merry at the recollection, and could not have his fill of gazing on the shores of France. Although guilty of unpatriotic acts, he had never been exactly unpatriotic in feeling.

And, listening, he watched his garments swinging to and fro from the hook, particularly the grey cloak. It held a strange fascination. "Monsieur improves constantly," observed Breton, soberly. Victor laughed, and began explaining the difficulty of constructing a ballade of double refrain, when a hand fell upon the door. "Enter," called the Chevalier, listlessly.

It would be interesting to know which were the compositions that Chopin produced at Valdemosa. Nor is there anything discrepant in the Ballade.
