Many are hermits who never leave their secluded haunts except to attend the MELAS and bestow their blessings on worldly men and women. "I was not a swami at the time I met Babaji," Sri Yukteswar went on. "But I had already received KRIYA initiation from Lahiri Mahasaya. Babaji had built his new bungalow immediately behind two dilapidated cottages, in which he had sometimes lodged during brief visits to the country. Everyone took for granted that he would pull down these cottages when the new house was ready. They abutted on to the front verandah, and occupied the ground which would naturally form the approach to the house.
"So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? Thus, Babaji said "Lahiri," not "Lahiri Mahasaya."
She has related that one day, in the Barackpur section near Calcutta, while she was sitting by Lahiri Mahasaya's side, his great guru Babaji quietly entered the room and held converse with them both. On one occasion her master Trailanga, forsaking his usual silence, honored Lahiri Mahasaya very pointedly in public. A Benares disciple objected.
Occasionally they transmit their prophecies through messengers in an ordinary way, that the final fulfillment of their words may infuse greater divine faith in a wide circle of men who later learn the story. "I soon left Benares, and set to work in Serampore on the scriptural writings requested by Babaji," Sri Yukteswar continued.
But when Babaji, with pardonable pride, was showing me round the completed house, he told me that he had decided to retain the two cottages; they would be useful as cookroom and storeroom; besides, they had been built by his father, and so out of respect to his memory he would wait till they fell down of themselves.
There, in lotus posture, sat the supreme Babaji. I knelt on the shining floor at his feet. "'Lahiri, are you still feasting on your dream desires for a golden palace? Babaji instructed me in the ancient rigid rules which govern the transmission of the yogic art from guru to disciple. "'Bestow the KRIYA key only on qualified chelas, Babaji said. So they pulled it down and prepared to build a new house in another garden. I had an opportunity of watching the whole progress of this project, and it gave me a good deal of insight into the character that Hinduism creates. Babaji having seen something of English ways during his term of office as collector, prepared to build the sort of house which would suit an Englishman.
