Amid the most intense hush, he added: "Somewhere, even as I have preached of him, and as you have listened, there is, I believe, a young man, of noble stature, exceedingly attractive, wealthy, fascinating, bewitching, in fact, since 'all the world will wonder after him' yes, somewhere in the world, perhaps in this very city where we are now gathered, is the young man who, presently, when our Lord has come, when the Church, and the Holy Spirit are gone, will manifest himself as the Anti-christ.

Much like as if a thief, when he had gotten into another man's house, and by violence either hath thrust out or slain the owner, should afterward assign the same house to himself, casting forth of possession the right inheritor; or if Anti-Christ, when he had once entered into "the temple of God," should afterward say, "This house is mine own, and Christ hath nothing to do withal."

The third decade of the century witnessed the triumph of Anti-Christ on every hand: in Germany the success of imperial arms was crowned by the Edict of Restitution; with the capture of Rochelle, the Huguenots in France lost their towns of refuge and found themselves at the mercy of the state; and in England itself the first Charles, more absolutist and more Catholic than his father, was thought to aim at nothing less than the ruin of Parliament and the restoration of the Roman religion.

Atheism only preaches a negation, but Romanism goes further; it preaches a disfigured, distorted Christ it preaches Anti-Christ I assure you, I swear it! This is my own personal conviction, and it has long distressed me. The Roman Catholic believes that the Church on earth cannot stand without universal temporal Power.

The bugbear of such is "modern science," or "modern thought," a monster which, we are frequently assured, is fast devouring all the beautiful and good in human life, a Moloch fed on the dreams and ideals and noble faiths of man. Modernity! For such "modernity" has taken the place of "Anti-Christ."

I urged in that article that the calumny of being Antichrist is almost "one of the notes of the true Church;" and that "there is no medium between a Vice-Christ and Anti-Christ;" for "it is not the acts that make the difference between them, but the authority for those acts." This of course was a new mode of viewing the question; but we cannot unmake ourselves or change our habits in a moment.

Coming back at this particular moment, Ralph asked himself: "Is Lucien Apleon the Anti-christ?" He paused an instant, then, as a sudden startling sense of assurance of the fact swept into his soul he cried: "He is! I have seen the Anti-christ!"

Before he was sixteen he made a collection of Scripture texts in proof of the doctrine of the trinity. From Newton On the Prophecies he learned to identify the Pope with anti-Christ a doctrine by which, he adds, his imagination was stained up to the year 1843. In his Apologia, 1865, he declares: 'From the age of fifteen, dogma has been a fundamental principle of my religion.

Ralph lowered the letter-sheet, a moment, and a weary little smile crept into his face. "I might have guessed that Apleon would have done this," he mused, "if he is, as I believe, the Anti-christ!" He lifted the letter again, and read on: "He wanted to take possession at once, and give me 5,000 pounds extra as a retiring fee for you.

But all those left behind when Christ comes, who may be won to Him afterwards, will not only miss the glories of the Heavenlies with Christ, but will suffer persecution, and many of them death at the hands of Anti-christ and his emissaries. Apleon had been on the Temple mount for two hours.
