Soon afterwards King Zoheir, to whom this incident had been related, summoned Antar into his presence, and declared that a man who could exhibit such courage and generosity was bound to become preeminent among his companions.
Moreover his father could not pardon the presumption of Antar, who, born a slave, had dared to cast eyes on his free-born cousin. When therefore he slew a slave who had slandered him, his father ordered him to be flogged, and sent away to watch over the cattle in the pastures. He had now before him a fresh opportunity for exhibiting his prodigious strength and invincible courage.
The survey soundings were not finished till nearly eight a.m. Her only ballast consisted of some six hundred conical shot, or twelve tons for a ship of eight hundred. It drains a small inland feature to the north-east, the true "Jebel 'Antar," which the Hydrographic Chart has confounded with the great block, applying, moreover, the term Istabl to the height instead of the hollow.
But the hostile and the envious continued to plot against him. They still aimed at preventing his marriage, and compassing his death. Amarah, who aspired to Ibla's hand, backed by all the chieftains hostile to Antar, renewed his suit and pretensions. Ibla was carried off from her house among the Absians, and taken to another tribe.
The Arabs were too nearly akin to Negroes to draw an absolute color line. Antar, one of the great pre-Islamic poets of Arabia, was the son of a black woman, and one of the great poets at the court of Haroun al Raschid was black.
He was destined for a career in the navy, and, in 1856, he was sent to study at the Petrograd Naval College. In 1861 he made the acquaintance of Balakirew and of the group about him. After a two-year cruise in the navy, Rimsky returned to Petrograd in 1865. In 1866 he was installed in furnished rooms, having decided upon becoming a composer. He began work on "Antar" in 1868.
She was accustomed to banter him in a familiar way, feeling that he was her slave. "And you," she said to him, "you, born so low, how dared you kill the slave of a prince? What provocation can you have against him?" "Mistress," replied Antar, "I struck that slave because he deserved it, for he had insulted a poor woman. He knocked her down, and made her the laughing stock of all the servants."
and is lost in the onrushing attack, furioso, of a strain that begins in murmuring of muted strings. Other phrases are merely graphic or incidental. But the Antar motive is throughout the central moving figure. The scene of the desert returns at the end of the movement. The ending is in long notes of solo oboe and first violins. There is no trace of the fairy queen throughout the movement.
II. The first joy granted by the Queen of Palmyra to Antar are the delights of vengeance. III. The second joy the delights of power. IV. Antar has returned to the fallen remains of Palmyra. The third and last gift granted by the fairy to Antar is the joy of true love.
Dark faces grinned over the steaming pot at the door of the cafes, idlers on the benches smoked hasheesh, female street-dancers bared their faces shamelessly to the men, and indolent musicians beat on their tiny drums, and sang the song of "O Seyyid," or of "Antar"; and the reciter gave his sing-song tale from a bench above his fellows.
