'Thou hast made the Most High thy habitation. The same word is employed in the 90th Psalm: 'Lord, Thou hast been our Dwelling-place in all generations. Beside that venerable and ancient abode, that has stood fresh, strong, incorruptible, and unaffected by the lapse of millenniums, there stands the little transitory canvas tent in which our earthly lives are spent. We have two dwelling-places.

My mother's list of the chapters with which, thus learned, she established my soul in life, has just fallen out of it. I will take what indulgence the incurious reader can give me, for printing the list thus accidentally occurrent: Exodus, chapters 15th and 20th. 2 Samuel, " 1st, from 17th verse to end. 1 Kings, " 8th. Psalms, " 23d, 32d, 90th, 91st, 103d, 112th, 119th, 139th.

"Sergeant-major, send in the next one." There were thirteen of us sent in one after the other; but only two, Dick Marshall, a Suffolk lad, and myself, were passed, the rest having some defect which made them unfit for soldiers. On our return, the sergeant asked Marshall and me if we would mind being transferred to the 90th regiment, stationed at Manchester. We answered, "Not in the least."

Comments on these letters would be superfluous, as they speak forcibly for themselves. "CAMP NEAR PARIS, KENTUCKY, April 7th, 1864. "Sir: I have the honor herewith to tender my resignation as First Lieutenant of Company 'I, 5th Cavalry, 90th Regiment Indiana Volunteers, on account of promotions in the regiment, which have placed men over me whom I cannot consistently serve under.

We die, as it were, in motion, as we sleep, and there is nowhere any boundary to our expansion. Perhaps we shall never again know any rest as we now understand the term rest being only change of motion and we shall not be able to sleep except on the cars, and whether we die by Denver time or by the 90th meridian, we shall only change our time.

Our ship, the "Franconia," the flagship of the fleet, had the headquarter staff, the 90th Regiment of Winnipeg, and a number of nurses on board, and she held place in the centre of the middle line. How an orderly fleet could be immediately dis-organized was well demonstrated one morning when our whistle blew sharply several times "Man Overboard."

Even to the last his strength seemed unimpaired, and he succumbed to a chance attack of bronchitis, but for which his constitution seemed to possess sufficient stamina to have made him a centenarian. He died at his residence on the 15th of February, 1873, being then in his 90th year. He was a well-informed man, and had a most retentive memory.

This was first breached by the artillery, and then carried by assault by the 53rd and 90th regiments, and a detachment of Sikhs; the latter, single handed, storming another building called the Observatory, in the rear of the Mess House. At the same time the garrison of the Residency had, in accordance with the plan brought out by Kavanagh, begun operations on their side.

The attempts hitherto made to relieve them have failed; and General Havelock, who commands, says he can do nothing unless he gets the 5th and 90th Regiments, the two I sent from Singapore on my own responsibility.

Since there were usually besides the witnesses also a number of others in the school room, in which names were signed in my catalogue, it seemed to be an easy task to discover the man, who had brought the name, by asking those who signed their names next the 90th. But there are thousands of discoveries quite easy, but they could not be made, till the time for their use arrived.
