+688+. The deeper conception of a conflict between the moral good and the moral evil in life belongs to the latest period in religious history. Here the determining fact is the control of the world by the high gods, who have their adversaries, but in general prove victors.

The Britons of Strathclyde conformed to the English usages in 688; the first British bishop to conform in that district was present at a Council at Rome in 721, where he signs himself "Sedulius, a bishop of Britain, by race a Scot." Pictish Scotland, and also Iona, adopted the Catholic rites between 710 and 717.

Whether this is a "nearly unaltered Christian building of the fourth century," or a construction of Abd-el-Malek, the second Caliph, erected in the year 688, has been debated keenly; but what is beyond debate is that this structure is very Byzantine, or, to speak with more exactness, very like some of the buildings of Justinian in plan and section, and that from early times it was in the possession of the Saracens, and was regarded by them as the next most venerable and sacred spot in the world after Mecca.

For international friendships are governed by National interests, and are built on quicksands, not on rock. Englishmen in India must give up the idea that English dominance is necessary for the protection of their interests, amounting, in 1915, to £365,399,000 sterling. They do not claim to dominate the United States of America, because they have invested there £688,078,000.

During the same period there were 22,928 patents granted and reissued and 1,429 trade-marks and labels registered.

Such public sentiment as they had centred about their dear Duke of Burgundy, and the dear Duke had no more urgent business than to keep out of their neighbourhood. . . . At least, and whether he liked it or not, our disreputable troubadour was tubbed and swaddled as a subject of the English crown. BOUGEOIS DE PARIS, ed. Pantheon, pp. 688, 689.

North Dakota's constitution provided that the legislature might in the future enfranchise women. History of Woman Suffrage, IV, p. 556. Harper, Anthony, II, p. 690. Ibid., p. 688. Harper, Anthony, II, p. 731. Ms., Diary, Feb. 28, April 18, 1893. Published first in the Woman's Tribune, then as a book in 1898 under the title, Eighty Years and More. Harper, Anthony, II, p. 712.

If Egypt was really selected as the headquarters of the democracy, there was no time to be lost; otherwise Pompeius might easily arrive in Egypt sooner than Caesar. The conspiracy of 688, far from being broken up by the lax and timid measures of repression, was again astir when the consular elections for 691 approached.

In this book there is no use of gold, and the treatment of the human form is most inadequate. There is no idea of drawing except for decorative purposes; it is an art of the pen rather than of the brush it hardly comes into the same category as most of the books designated as illuminated manuscripts. Cuthbert, was executed at the Abbey of Lindisfarne, in 688, and is now in the British Museum.
