The Gir, totally unknown at the present day, is familiarly mentioned by Claudian, who, however, it may be recollected, was a native of Africa: 'Gir, ditissimus amnis 'Aethiopum, simili mentitus gurgite Nilum. Carm. 21. v. 252. In some MSS. it is notissimus amnis; but the other reading is more probable.
The following allusion to the topics we have just been considering is from Milton's "Comus," line 252: "... I have often heard My mother Circe and the Sirens three, Amidst the flowery-kirtled Naiades, Culling their potent herbs and baneful drugs, Who as they sung would take the prisoned soul And lap it in Elysium.

They moult about January or February, and in May, when they are in full plumage, the males assemble early in the morning to exhibit themselves in the singular manner already described at p. 252. This habit enables the natives to obtain specimens with comparative ease.

P. 252, and elsewhere: I agree thoroughly with the general principle that a great area with many competing forms is necessary for much and high development; but do you not extend this principle too far I should say much too far, considering how often several species of the same genus have been developed on very small islands?
