They could never be overlooked, on the other hand, in experimental culture. The first record of the peloric toad-flax is that of Zioberg, a student of Linnaeus, who found it in the neighborhood of Upsala. This curious discovery was described by Rudberg in his dissertation in the year 1744.
As a matter of course, this home was a distinguished social centre, drawing to itself the most brilliant colonial society. Colonel Byrd died in 1744, and was buried in the old garden when it was in all its summer glory.
Born at Vienna in 1744, she began her musical studies while still a child. Her first efforts at composition were made when she was twelve years old, and met with a most favourable reception, though of course they cannot compare with her later productions. She was an excellent pianist, or what would correspond to a pianist in our day, and among her teachers on the harpsichord was Haydn himself.
Ludolff's discovery, as it chanced, was made in the lecture-hall of the reorganized Academy of Sciences at Berlin, before an audience of scientists and great personages, at the opening lecture in 1744.
It gives us pleasure rather as the glitter of a diamond than as the perfume of a rose. In spite of his crooked, sickly little body Pope lived to be fifty-six, and one evening in May 1744 he died peacefully in his home at Twickenham, and was buried in the church there, near the monument which he had put up to the memory of his father and mother.
He died on June 15, 1744, according to the Gent. Mag. xiv. 339; where he is described as 'the consecrated Archbishop of St. Andrews. See ante, ii. 216. George Hickes, 1642-1715. A non-juror, consecrated in 1693 suffragan bishop of Thetford by three of the deprived non-juror bishops. Chalmers's Biog. Dict. xvii. 450. See ante, ii. 458. This must be a mistake for He died.
Late in life he was fond of understating his age as people somehow will do: 'I am old enough, he said once, with the air of making a very frank avowal, 'I am old enough to have been a contemporary of Pope. Which was not remarkable, considering that Pope did not die until 1744, when Mr. Ramsay must have been thirty-one. He had a natural talent for art. He began to sketch at twelve.
Wherever he came, he laid the country under contribution, and, at this moment of triumph for the Austrian arms, opened himself a passage to enter the territories of France. In September, 1744, war having broken out between Austria and Prussia, the imperial army was obliged to return, abandon Alsatia, and hasten to the succour of the Austrian states. Trenck succeeded in covering its retreat.
His attempts had long been evaded by the skill and vigilance of the French general, till, at last, June 21, 1744, he executed his design, and lodged his army in the French dominions, to the surprise and joy of a great part of Europe.
Relying, therefore, upon the promises of the French, he resolved to attempt the ruin of the house of Austria, and, in August, 1744, broke into Bohemia, at the head of a hundred and four thousand men.
