Conceive this nation, of all human peoples, engaged in a crusade to make the "World Safe for Democracy"! Can you imagine the United States protesting against Turkish atrocities in Armenia, while the Turks are silent about mobs in Chicago and St. Louis; what is Louvain compared with Memphis, Waco, Washington, Dyersburg, and Estill Springs?
Waco jumped to his feet and backed away. The leader of the group hesitated wisely, because Waco had a gun in his hand. "So that's your game, eh? Collectin' internal revenue. Well, we're union men. You better sift along." And the leader sat down. "I've a dam' good mind to sift you," said Waco, backing toward the embankment. "Got to have a card to travel with a lousy bunch like you, eh?"
If I do move sometime within the next twelve-month it will be bruited throughout the universe that I was driven out of Waco, just as my brethren in Christ say I was driven out of San Antonio; but that won't worry my soul a cent's worth. I've been lied about so d n much, that I feel ill at ease and neglected unless the target of vindictive mendacity by tearful souls who fail to pay their debts.
What if they had taken the Wacoes by surprise, and had already made their attack! It was quite probable more than probable. The time and the hour were just in keeping. The estampeda had occurred before midnight. No doubt they were then on their way to the Waco village. They would just be in time to make their attack, at the usual hour for such forays, between midnight and morning.
It was the second meeting with Prof. H. T. Kealing, then president of Paul Quinn College, Waco, Tex., but now editor of the African Methodist Episcopal Church Review, an ambitious magazine publication of the great African Methodist Episcopal Church. The occasion was a Quarterly Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church at Mineola, and Professor Kealing was there to deliver a lecture.
The Congress of the Imperium was called and assembled in special session at the Capitol building just outside of Waco. The session began on the morning of April the same day on which the Congress of the United States had under consideration the resolutions, the adoption of which meant war with Spain.
He begged her to be assured of his love and know that he would not stay away one second longer than was necessary. Thus assured, she let him go, after kissing him more than a hundred times. Belton turned his back on this home of happiness and love, to walk into the embrace of death. He arrived in Waco in due time, and the morning of his execution came.
Texas has probably suffered less than any other American state from hard times, Waco less than any other Texas city, for here we can subsist on climate and sanctification.
So far the Indians translated the tableau, but the mystery lay not there. Who had slain the slayer of their chief? That was the puzzle. Some one must have survived this deadly strife, where five warriors had died together! If a Pane, surely he would not have gone off without that great trophy which would have rendered him famous for life, the scalp of the Waco chief?
Beyond control of their leaders, crazed with drink and killing, they surged forward, quarreling, and shoved from behind by those above. "We're ridin'," said the old Ranger. With a man on each side of him he charged across the square. Waco, peering from behind a stone column in the entrance, saw that Lorry was one of the riders. Lorry's lips were drawn tight.
