Look at the first hymns you learned to repeat, and which you used to say at your mother's knee; look at the psalms and hymns you remember hearing sung at church when you were a child: you know how impossible it is for you to estimate these upon their literary merits. They may be almost doggerel; but not Mr. Tennyson can touch you like them!
While sitting, he wiled away an hour by making doggerel lines all to rhyme with the artist's name, Nerli. The portrait was bought by a Scotch-woman travelling in New Zeal and, where, after the author's death, it had remained unsold. His mother, on returning to Scotland when bereft of her boy, asked to see the picture again.
Fraught with this intelligence, he composed the following ballad in doggerel rhymes; and next day, presented it as a gloss upon the text which the tutor had chosen:
Yet he had much tenderness. He had a soul like a Red Indian's all tomahawk and truth, until the literary passion came and added humour to it. He demands in his vigorous doggerel: May I not write in such a style as this, In such a method, too, and yet not miss My end, thy good? Why may it not be done? Dark clouds bring waters, when the bright bring none.
But it would take a long time. When modern creeds are gone, to what in literature will men turn for their inspiration? To whatever in literature contains real inspiration, you may answer. They will not sing Dr. Watts's doggerel in their churches; but such things perhaps as Wordsworth's The World is too much with us, or Henley's I am the Captain of my Soul.
Every evening I go out into the streets and buy the latest editions of the evening journals. If there is anything in them worthy commemoration in verse, I compose. There is generally something. I cannot say to which paper I send most of my poems, as I send to all. One of the weaknesses of the St. John's Gazette is its poetry. It is not worthy of the name. It is doggerel.
Speaking roughly, several centuries of charitable practice, in the English world at least, are fairly well summed up in the doggerel verses of that sixteenth-century divine, quoted by Hobson, who counselled his flock, "Yet cease not to give Without any regard; Though the beggars be wicked, Thou shalt have thy reward."
The volume closes with a doggerel translation of one of several Gospel ballads which Carey had written in Bengali in 1798. He had thus early brought into the service of Christ the Hindoo love of musical recitative, which was recently re-discovered as it were and now forms an important mode of evangelistic work when accompanied by native musical instruments.
And here, some verses against the king, in which the scribbler leaves a blank for the name of George, as if his doggerel might yet exalt him to the pillory. Such, after years of rebellion, is the heart's unconquerable reverence for the Lord's anointed! In the next column, we have scripture parodied in a squib against his sacred Majesty. What would our Puritan great-grandsires have said to that?
The gentleman gave him the shilling, and the fairy rider a little red man rode a horse for him in a race, waving a red handkerchief to him as a signal when he was to double the stakes, and made him a rich man. Then he gave us an extraordinary English doggerel rhyme which I took down, though it seems singularly incoherent when written out at length.
