When the song was finished the loud snoring of Captain Wriothesley became audible. He had begun to spread some rugs to lie on, but, becoming hopelessly entangled in his bridle-reins, surcingle, and stirrup-straps, had fallen to sleep with his feet on his saddle and his head on the floor. "Hallo, we can't have this!" shouted one of the fellows.
Cottrell approvingly, "and reduces it merely to lunching at any house in London. Cabs innumerable round there; one, as you say, can get away at any time." "And now, Captain Bloxam," said Mrs. Wriothesley, "if you will ring the bell for coffee, Sylla and I will get our cloaks on while it cools; and then I think we must be going. Oh, about transport?" she adds, pausing at the door. "I think, Mr.
Wriothesley wisely kept all these reflections to herself. The accident at Hurlingham had opened Sylla's eyes. She became conscious of what her feeling for Jim Bloxam was fast ripening into. It made her thoughtful. She was suddenly aware that she cared considerably more about him than it was wise that a maiden should for any man not her avowed lover.
'But this envoy would not speak; his knaves took my gold and had no news. The King of France's men 'Oh aye, Cromwell continued; 'speak on about the other matter. Wriothesley turned his slow mind from his vexation in Paris, whence he had come a special journey to report of the envoy from Cleves. He spoke again swiftly, turning right round to Cromwell.
'Sir, he said, 'study above all to please the King. For unless you guide us we are lost indeed. Cromwell worked his lips one upon another and moved a hand. 'Aye, Wriothesley continued; 'it can be done only by bringing the King's Highness and the Lady Katharine to a marriage. 'Only by that? Cromwell asked enigmatically.
"I wish, Rip," said Mrs. Wriothesley, putting her head into her husband's sanctum one morning, "you would look in at Bubb's this afternoon, and tell them to send me a box for the Prince of Wales's next Wednesday. You will of course do as you like, but I am going to ask Jim Bloxam to dine and go with us to the play." "What a clever designing little woman it is!" replied her husband lazily.
At last the Archbishop lost his patience and cried out: 'What will you do? What will you do? Cromwell swung his figure round before him. 'I will discover what Cleves will do in this matter, he said. 'All dependeth therefrom. 'Nay; make a peace with Rome, Cranmer uttered suddenly. 'I am weary of these strivings. But Wriothesley clenched his fist.
And then he turned away to welcome fresh arrivals, leaving Sylla and Mrs. Wriothesley to greet their friends and inspect the arrangements made for their entertainment. And that these had been the result of much thought and preparation was transparent even to the unreflecting. Like an elaborate piece of clockwork, the whole affair was not as yet in motion.
Wriothesley took in the play proved what an enthusiast she was about dramatic art. But the green curtain fell at last though, with the exception of Mrs. Wriothesley, it would be almost open to question whether any of them knew even the name of the piece they had witnessed and the party proceeded homewards.
He had not lingered to exchange a few words with them as he had with Mrs. Wriothesley and Sylla, and Lady Mary felt filled with dread that her rival had already triumphed, and was receiving, conjointly with Miss Chipchase, the homage of the conquered.
