On this last occasion, although we did not prepare the plate until a good twenty minutes after the turf was thrown in, the spring remained inactive so much longer than is usual that the collodion became quite insensitive, and the eruption left no impression whatever upon it. Of our return journey to Reykjavik I think I have no very interesting particulars to give you.
If a mixture of filtered potato starch paste and erythrodextrin is dried in a watch glass covered with a thin pellicle of collodion, and a drop of iodine solution placed on the latter, it penetrates very slowly through the pellicle, the dextrin becoming first tinctured with red, and the granulose afterward with blue.

As is well known to photographers, in 1871 Dr. R.L. Maddox used gelatine in place of collodion from which innovation rose the present system of dry plate photography. My father had always felt the greatest interest in the use of photography in astronomy. He was acquainted with the splendid work done by Chapman for Rutherford, New York, in his careful and exquisite photographs of the moon.
This must be done through perfectly clean cotton-wool into a perfectly clean collodion bottle; give the emulsion a good shaking, and when all bubbles have subsided, pour it into the funnel, and it will go through in five minutes. The filtered emulsion will be found to be a soft, smooth, creamy fluid, flowing easily and equally over the plates.

On being removed from this, it is thoroughly washed, dried, and mounted, by pasting it with starch or dextrine to a card of the proper size. The reader who has followed the details of the process may like to know what are the common difficulties the beginner meets with. The first is in coating the glass with collodion. It takes some practice to learn to do this neatly and uniformly.
We watched curiously as Kennedy poured it over the charred remains of the second order on the spindle. It seemed almost inconceivable that the remnants of the charred paper would even support the weight of the liquid, yet Kennedy used it with care, and slowly the collodion hardened before us, creating a tough transparent coating which held the tiny fibers of the slip together.
When I first took up the making of transparencies with wet collodion, I was told that my sorrows would not be far to seek, and so I soon found out.
