Papineau alienated all the British by his determination to found a "Nation Canadienne" in which the British would occupy a very inferior place. "French and British," said Lord Durham, "combined for no public objects or improvements, and could not harmonise even in associations of charity."
Before his death, he saw Lower Canada elevated to an independent and influential position in the confederation of British North America which it could never have reached as that Nation Canadienne which he had once vainly hoped to see established in the valley of the St. Lawrence. The Rouges, of whom Papineau had been leader, came back in good form and numbered nineteen members.
French Canada found itself represented by a party, over twenty in number, the most compact in the House of Assembly, and with la nation Canadienne solidly behind them. In La Fontaine, Viger, Morin and others, it had leaders both skilful and fully trusted.
The French population formed, naturally, the chief difficulty. Thanks to the terms of the surrender in 1763, and the policy of Dorchester, a unit which called itself la nation Canadienne had been formed, nationalité had become a force in Lower Canada, imperfectly appreciated even by the leaders of the progressive movement in England and Western Canada.
They must always remain, however, the most creditable specimens of works of that class ever published in any country. The first volume of poetry, written by a French Canadian, was published in 1830, by M. Michel Bibaud, who was also the editor of the 'Bibliotheque Canadienne, and 'Le Magazin du Bas Canada, periodicals very short lived, though somewhat promising.
"Charlie, man! you are making much ado about nothing; and, Graeme, you are as bad. Of course, Rosie's name was not mentioned; but I know quite well, and so do you, who `La belle Canadienne' was. But no harm was meant, and none was done." "It would be rather a good joke if Rosie were to rule in the `Palatial Residence' after all, wouldn't it?" said Arthur, laughing. "Arthur, don't!

"Point de despotisme!": while flags and placards were displayed with similar illustrations of popular frenzy. La Nation Canadienne was now launched on the turbulent waves of a little rebellion in which the phrases of the French revolution were glibly shouted by the habitants with very little conception of their real significance.
The history of the fifty years that have elapsed since the dark days of Canada, when Papineau wished to establish a "Nation Canadienne," goes to show that the governing classes of the English and French nationalities have ceased to feel towards each other that intense spirit of jealousy which was likely at one time to develop itself into a dangerous hatred.
The strains of a violin in the farm-house struck his ear. Someone was fiddling the well-known sprightly air, "Vive la Canadienne:" "Long live the fair Canadian girl, With her sweet, tender eyes." The house was a large cottage, having around its door a slender gallery, at whose side went down a stair.
