In November, 1881, Gambetta became the head of the cabinet; but the opposition to his policy within the republican ranks was stronger than had been anticipated. After a short time he laid down his office. He died Dec. 31, 1882. He was forced to resign in 1887 because his son-in-law was implicated in corrupt transactions. His successor was Sadi Carnot.

He now surprised the country, roused his party, and gave fresh animation to national politics on December 6, 1887, by devoting his third annual message wholly to the subject of taxation and revenue.

The opera of "Nero," the libretto by Jules Barbier, was first produced in Hamburg in 1879, though it was originally intended for the French stage, and in this country, March 14, 1887, at New York, by the American Opera Company, under the direction of Mr. Theodore Thomas, with the following cast: NERO Mr. LUDWIG. TIGELLINUS Mr. STODDARD. BALBILLUS Mr. WHITNEY. SACCUS Mr. FESSENDEN. SEVIRUS Mr.

Therefore I merely repeat, as applicable to the present time, the statement which will be found in my message to the Senate of September 12 last, that Since March 3, 1887, no case has been reported to the Department of State wherein complaint was made of unfriendly or unlawful treatment of American fishing vessels on the part of the Canadian authorities in which reparation was not promptly and satisfactorily obtained by the United States consul-general at Halifax.

During 1887 there was more hitting to short than to any other in-field position; though the second baseman averaged more "total chances," on account of a greater number of "put-outs," the "assists" were in favor of the short-stop.

A bill to this effect was introduced in the Reichstag on December 9, 1887, and another bill, which was to procure the money for this increase in armaments, was introduced on January 31, 1888. Both bills were on the calendar of February 6. In addressing you today I do not intend to recommend to you the acceptance of the bill which your president has just mentioned.

The Harrison administration proceeded upon the President's theory that it "was no time to be weighing the claims of old soldiers with apothecary's scales." A dependent pension bill like that which President Cleveland vetoed in 1887 was passed in 1890. The list of pensioners more than doubled in length; the number of applications for aid increased tenfold in two years.

Stevens never saw this place in her normal condition, it is to me a wonderful test of spirit power." HYPNOTISM IN INSANITY. We learn from the German periodical, Sphinx, that hypnotism has been used in an insane asylum near Zurich since March, 1887, in 41 cases, a report of which has been made by Dr. Forel.
