In the course of a day or so they had touched on nearly every phase in the growth of Man and Woman from that remote and brutish past which has left its traces in human bones mingled with the bones of hyaenas and cave bears beneath the stalagmites of Wookey Hole near Wells.

Of the former the Cheddar Caves and Wookey Hole are the most remarkable; and a good example of the latter is the Devil's Punch Bowl near E. Harptree. The chief antiquities consist of the old Roman lead-mines and an amphitheatre near Priddy, the old Roman road linking Uphill with Old Sarum, and a few camps, such as those at Masbury and Burrington.

Wookey, a village 2 m. W. from Wells, with a station on the G.W.R. Cheddar branch. The church chiefly Perp., with a blend of E.E. is interesting. The tower stair turret carries a lofty spirelet. On the S. side of the sanctuary is a small Perp. chapel decorated with modern frescoes, containing a plain altar-tomb to Thos. Clarke and wife, 1689. In the churchyard is the base of a cross.

While Shomolekae was at Pitsani there came into that part of Africa a new missionary, whose name was Mr. Wookey. It was decided that Mr. Wookey should go a long, long journey and settle down by the shores of Lake Ngami, which, you remember, David Livingstone had discovered long years before. Shomolekae wished to go out with Mr. Wookey into this country and to help.

Some traces of a moat were not long ago still to be seen at the Bishop's court-house at Wookey in Somerset. Is it possible that this unsavoury ditch really marks out the home precinct of the father of kings? Can it be that Tancred lived within it, perhaps in a wooden house, defended by a palisade and by such a ditch?

R.B. Knight, had also sailed for Cape Palmas, to engage Kru-men, and Mr. Hogg had been left in charge. Messrs. Wookey and Dyer, general merchants, Liverpool. Agents, Messrs. Gordon and Bryant. Messrs. Bruford and Townsend, of Bristol. Agent, Captain Townsend. The resident agents for the Hamburg houses were Messrs. Henert and Bremer.

Near the entrance is a mass of rock known as the Witch of Wookey, who was turned into stone there by a timely prayer from a monk who opportunely arrived from Glastonbury. The underground course of the Axe in and beyond this cave is traced for at least two miles.

Several of them were to appear on two or three charges, and three R.F.C. officers were to be tried for dropping leaflets in the German lines. I believe it came to nothing in the end, as there was not enough evidence to convict them. Captain Scholtz and Lieutenant Wookey do not seem to have been so lucky.

At the proper Jubilee the Fifty Year affair I was down at Wookey a boy. I missed all that.... What a fuss we had with him! My landlady wouldn't take him in, wouldn't let him stay he looked so queer when he was rigid. We had to carry him in a chair up to the hotel.
