The great efforts to liberalize and rationalize the Church which the last century witnessed, up to Professor Harnack's recent attempt to sum up "Das Wesen des Christenthums," what are all these but endeavors to free it from foreign accretions and envelopments and to bring its Semitic character into greater prominence?

He believes that the Creator is a magnified non-natural man, living in the sky. The Gippsland or Fuegian or Blackfoot Supreme Being is just a Being, anthropomorphic, not a mrart, or 'spirit. The Supreme Being is a wesen, Being, Vui; we have hardly a term for an immortal existence so undefined.

What Goethe says in the Westöstlicher Divan is quite true, that it is useless to complain against your enemies; for they can never become your friends, if your whole being is a standing reproach to them: Was klagst du über Feinde? Sollten Solche je warden Freunde Denen das Wesen, wie du bist, Im stillen ein ewiger Vorwurf ist?

This has been achieved in the lines which have been quoted times without number in the newest German war literature: Und es mag am deutschen Wesen Einmal noch die Welt genesen! "The hope here expressed has become a certainty for modern Germany, and the Germans see in this the moral basis for all their demands.

P. 7: Being guarded and circumscribed with rights. P. 3: “Ein Wesen das ebenfalls seine Vorzüge hatis unaltered. P. 8: A most unaccountable obliquity in the manner of setting up my top. Meine seltsame Ungeschicklichkeit meinen Kopf zu recht zu machen.

Both countries were increasing in wealth ours, like Germany, very rapidly and if Germany built we must build.

His book, "Wesen des Christenthums," in which his ideas were set forth, became immediately popular, and an English translation, which was widely read, was made of it by George Eliot under the title of "Essence of Christianity." Engels is by no means grudging of expressions of appreciation with regard to this work, and its effects both upon himself and the educated world in general.

From these sombre forests came a race who still find it lonely to be alone, and they herd together still for safety as of old, and have no love of physical speculation. They are daring in thought and theory, but cautious in physical and personal matters. An office stool followed by a pension contents all too many men in Germany. "Reden, Handeln, Tun und Wandeln Zeigt der Menschen Wesen nicht.

Choose which you will take; you have a safe-conduct. If you cannot travel you must burn." When the Catholic rulers wished to avenge this outrage, the burghers of Wesen sought aid from Zurich, which, because she had no jurisdiction in that region, was denied them.
