Early in the afternoon, they came upon a tiny rivulet running out of a pool, or vley. Supposing it to be a tributary of the river they were in search of, they concluded that by following it down, they should reach the main stream. This, however, they were in no haste to do, since the country around the pool appeared to be the best sort of hunting-ground.

Hans was not there he had gone away hours ago they knew not where, they feared something had happened to him, they feared he was lost! "But what took him away from the camp?" asked Von Bloom, surprised and troubled at the news. That, and only that could they answer. A number of odd-looking animals very odd-looking, the children said, had come to the vley to drink.

I moved the column to the edge of a wide vley to the right of the road, and formed the horses in quarter-column under cover of the slope. The carts were formed up in rear and on both flanks, and five Maxims were placed along the front so as to sweep the plateau. The other three Maxims and the heavy guns were posted on the rear and flank faces.

Deeming it probable that when my dogs came up and I approached they would still retreat and make a bolt across the vley, I directed Carey to canter forward and take up the ground in the centre of the vley about four hundred yards in advance; whereby the lions would be compelled either to give us battle or swim the river, which, although narrow, I knew they would be very reluctant to do.

Even during that night they had heard the roaring of lions down by the vley; and when it was morning, the spoor showed that several of these animals had drunk at the water. How could he leave little Truey his dear little Truey or Jan, who was not a bit bigger how could he leave them in an open camp while such monsters were roving about? He could not think of doing so.

Swartboy, for some purpose of his own, had cut off the hair before letting them go. Hendrik had no doubt it was they, and that the herd was the same that used to frequent the vley, but that on account of the ill-treatment they had met with, had never since shown themselves in the neighbourhood.

I turned my head slowly to rebuke him, and again taming to the lions I found myself discovered. An old lioness, who seemed to take the lead, had detected me, and, with her head high and her eyes fixed full upon me, she was coming slowly round the corner of the little vley to cultivate further my acquaintance! This unfortunate proceeding put a stop at once to all further contemplation.

The name of this fountain was Massouey, but I at once christened it "the Elephant's own Fountain." This was a very remarkable spot on the southern borders of endless elephant forests, at which I had at length arrived. The fountain was deep and strong, situated in a hollow at the eastern extremity of an extensive vley, and its margin was surrounded by a level stratum of solid old red sandstone.

Without halting, he headed in the direction of the vley already mentioned; and kept on towards it, his object evidently being to reach the water. This little lake, of course, owed its existence to the spring though it was full two hundred yards from the latter and about the same from the great tree.

Colonel White then led the advance for a mile across the vley without casualty, but on reaching the opposite rise near the Oceanic Mine, was subjected to a very heavy long-range fire. Colonel White hereupon very judiciously threw out one troop to the left to cover the further advance of the main body.
