This birth lasted one hour. That the word "taters" is a corruption of, and vulgarism for, "testes" we see very readily in the expression "strain my taters" i.e., to pass urine or make water.
Trans. v. 59. p. 392. and as no other vessels open into it besides these and the ureters, it seems evident, that the unnatural urine, produced as above described, when the ureters were tied, or the kidneys obliterated, was carried into the bladder by the retrograde motions of the urinary branch of the lymphatic system.
The process is now, however, generally known, and simply consists of cleaning, drying, and powdering the plant, which, when mixed with half its weight of pearl ash, is moistened with human urine, and then allowed to ferment: the fermentation, we are informed by Professor Burnett, "is kept up for some time by successive additions of urine, until the colour of the materials changes to a purplish-red, and subsequently to a violet or blue.
The discharges from the throat are occasionally, but not always, offensive. There is danger of croup from the extension of the membrane into the wind pipe. The glands about the neck and under the jaw are generally much swollen, the skin is rather cold and clammy, the urine is scanty and usually pale, the bowels at first are frequently relaxed.
The nitrification of the urine had evidently proceeded until the whole of the ammonium had been changed into ammonium nitrate, and the action had then ceased. This fact is of practical importance. Sewage will be thoroughly nitrified only when a sufficient supply of calcium carbonate, or some other base, is available.
