Reading and experimenting brought a freshness to his work that stimulated detours into untraveled paths. But Mary, Eliza, and Jane never sought out the uncharted way. Evidently monotony suited their stolid temperaments; or if it did not, they never rebelled against it or tried to shake off its fetters.
With the passing of the hours gloomier thoughts shadowed these anticipations. In some mysterious way Meleese was closely associated with those who sought his life, and if they disappeared she would disappear with them. He was convinced of that. And then could he find her again? Would she go into the South to civilization or deeper into the untraveled wildernesses of the North?
After that he would keep always west and north, deeper and deeper into that wild and untraveled country which would be the last place in which the Law would seek for them.
Such scenes were a new thing to my untraveled eyes, they were in very truth the revelation of a new world to me.
I remember very well, as so many must, some of the marked features of the route that General Bidwell mentions. One of the most imposing of these is Court House Rock, near the North Platte. Surely no object of such dignity ever had a more belittling name given it in good faith no doubt by some untraveled wight whose county court-house was the most "reverend pile" of which he had any conception.
If the wood thrush had been here, the chorus would have been complete, a chorus not to be excelled, according to my untraveled belief, in any quarter of the world. To-day, however, my first thoughts were not of birds, but of the mountain.
He considered it quite natural that she should be a trifle hysterical in anticipating her new life that strange untraveled country! Ah, is there anything more pathetic, he thought, than a girl's anticipations of wifehood?
It was as wide and straight as a city street, yet it seemed untraveled. No fields bordered it, no dwelling anywhere. Not so much as the barking of a dog suggested human habitation. The black bodies of the trees formed a straight wall on both sides, terminating on the horizon in a point, like a diagram in a lesson in perspective.
We see the same thought expressed in the same kind of metaphor in the bold but beautiful expression which occurs in the letters from Raphael to Julius in the magazine, The Thalia "When Columbus made the risky wager with an untraveled sea." *
Many of my readers probably know what the Ghetto at Rome is, but untraveled stayers-at-home may very excusably never have heard of it. The Ghetto is the Jews' quarter in Rome the district in which they were for many generations compelled to reside and to be locked in by night, and where from habit the greater part, especially of the poorer members of the Jewish community, still live.
