Eccentric, careless, and fearless; handsome, witty, and learned; ambitious, shrewd, and visionary, she was one of the strangest compounds of "unlikes" to be met with in history. She deliberately threw away a crown, wasted a life that might have been helpful to her subjects, regarded only her own selfish and personal desires, and died a prematurely old woman at sixty-five, unloved and unhonored.
Before, I used to know just when to be Mary, and when to be Marie Mary with Father, Marie with Mother. Now I don't know at all. Why, they can't even seem to agree on that! I suppose it's just some more of that incompatibility business showing up even when they are apart. And poor me I have to suffer for it. I'm beginning to see that the child does suffer I mean the child of unlikes.
"But I am two in one," I declared. "That's why I'm a cross-current and a contradiction, you know," I explained. I thought he'd understand. But he didn't. I supposed, of course, he knew what a cross-current and a contradiction was. But he turned again and stared at me. "A what?" he demanded. "A cross-current and a contradiction," I explained once more. "Children of unlikes, you know.
Four or five miles outside the principal gate of Peking is the Nan Hai-tzu, or Imperial Hunting Park, where a few years ago there were herds of far-famed hybrids known as the "four unlikes," since they possessed certain attributes of, I believe, the horse, the deer, the ox and the sheep, without belonging definitely to either family.
But I find no torpor in California. And where there is no one that will allow himself to be preyed upon, even blond beasts take up the new enterprise of co-operation among equals. This is an inevitable result of the contact of many varieties of unlikes, the unification, not of equals, but of supplementary equivalents.
The currents, if you will notice, at the north poles move toward each other, and at the south poles move away from each other. They are, therefore, acting against each other, and the result will be that the magnets will move away from each other. "Is that the reason it is stated that likes repel and unlikes attract?" "Yes."
Maybe I won't have to tell her, unless she asks me. But I know it. And, pray, what am I to do? Of course, I can act like Marie here all right, if that is what folks want. They're all Mary. That's all I brought. Oh, dear suz me! Why couldn't Father and Mother have been just the common live-happy-ever-after kind, or else found out before they married that they were unlikes? September.
So he sat back again in his chair. For a minute he just frowned and stared at nothing; then he spoke again, as if half to himself. "I suppose, Mary, we were unlikes, your mother and I. That's just what we were; though I never thought of it before, in just that way." He waited, then went on, still half to himself, his eyes on the dancers: "She loved things like this music, laughter, gayety.
The unconscious habit, common to so many people, of tracing likes in unlikes had often led him to discern, or to fancy he discerned, in the Roman atmosphere, in its lights and shades, and particularly in its reflected or secondary lights, something resembling the atmosphere of his native promontory.
But such utter unlikes cannot but end in dislikes, and so it proved between Erasmus and Luther. Erasmus, might the Protestants say, wished no good to the Church of Rome, and still less to our party: it was with him 'Rot her and Dam us'! Chap. XLVIII. p. 442.
