In any matter of which the public has imperfect knowledge, public opinion is as likely to be erroneous as is the opinion of an individual equally uninformed. To hold otherwise is to hold that wisdom can be got by combining many ignorances.
Moreover, thou wast ignorant illiterate uninformed: now all the sources of knowledge all the springs of learning all the fountains of science and art, are at thy disposal, and with whose waters thou canst slake the thirst of thine intellect.
I have within me a great area of Mind that is under my command, and subject to my Mastery. This Mind is friendly to me, and is glad to do my bidding, and obey my orders. It will work for me when I ask it, and is constant, untiring, and faithful. Knowing this I am no longer afraid, ignorant or uninformed. The "I" is master of it all, and is asserting its authority.
The one blew "the blast of doom" of the old patronage; the other, against heavier odds, contended against the later tyranny of uninformed and insolent popular opinion. Carlyle did not escape wholly from the influence of the most infectious, if the most morbid, of French writers, J.J. Rousseau.
Deeply smitten with the marvellous, disdaining the simple, despising that which is easy of comprehension, but little instructed in the ways of nature, accustomed to neglect the use of their reason, the uninformed, from age to age, prostrate themselves before those invisible powers which they have been taught to adore.
God has given to them the very same organs of sensation as to us: if therefore they have no sensation, God has created a useless thing; now according to your own confession God does nothing in vain; He therefore did not create so many organs of sensation, merely for them to be uninformed with this faculty; consequently beasts are not mere machines.
I made inquiries through the usual English channels, but they were equally uninformed.
This faculty of speculating at random on all questions may in its overgrown and uninformed state do much mischief without intending it, like an overgrown child with the power of a man. Mr. Shelley has been accused of vanity I think he is chargeable with extreme levity; but this levity is so great that I do not believe he is sensible of its consequences.
Lo! thou art named a Jew, and restest on the law, and boastest in God, and knowest the will of God, and bringest to the test the things that are different, being instructed out of the law; and hast confidence that thou thyself art a leader of the blind, a light of those who are in darkness, an instructor of the uninformed, a teacher of babes, holding the form of knowledge and of truth in the law.
Why did those eyes, unless they moved, which they didn't, always look back into ours no matter in what part of the room we stood? a perpetual puzzle to our childish uninformed brains.
