Now, this one staring man seemed like a watching multitude. There were tears in her eyes, and she felt that the red-faced man suspected it. "Wally . . ." Her voice broke. "It's impossible." "Why? Why, Jill?" "Because . . . Oh, it's impossible!" There was a silence. "Because . . ." He seemed to find a difficulty in speaking, "Because of Underhill?" Jill nodded. She felt wretched.
But Dolly was very good to the young lovers, and they had so many mutual friends. Then Margaret was quite shy, she hardly knew what to make of the attentions that were so reverent and sweet. She couldn't have discussed them with a single human being. Mr. and Mrs. Underhill had called on their new cousins in Hammersley Street. And on Washington's Birthday he took the little girl and Ben over.
Of course they must all be pleased about it," commented Mrs. Underhill. Just a few days later, Mrs. Odell came down for some advice and help, for Janey was to be married. Her betrothed was a well-to-do young farmer up in Sullivan County. He was coming down in August to go to the World's Fair; and he wanted to be married and make a general holiday of it.
Oh Lord, says Underhill, we are all undone! how! says Crowne, is the Playhouse on fire? the whole nation, replies the player, will quickly be so, for the King is dead; at the hearing of which dismal words, the author was thrown almost into distraction; for he who the moment before was ravished with the thought of the pleasure he was about to give the King, and the favours which he was afterwards to receive from him, this moment found, to his unspeakable sorrow, that his Royal patron was gone for ever, and with him all his hopes.
They were, J. L. Ackley, F. I. Bradley, C. D. Brayton, W. A. Clark, Horace Congar, E. Cushing, Jonathan Foote, S. B. Gay, Robert Hicks, M. L. Hewitt, Smith Inglehart, Robert Johnston, Burr Kellogg, David Long, P. Mathivet, George Mendenhall, Joshua Mills, T. M. Moore, W. F. Otis, A. D. Smith, J. Swain, Charles Terry, Samuel Underhill, Joseph Walrath.
For the suggestive elaboration of this threefold classification, see Evelyn Underhill, Mysticism, chap. vi. p. 151 seq.
We had Mexican sixpences and shillings in those days. "You'll have enough on your mind without that debt. And next time think of the folks at home." "Why didn't the Whitneys feel worried? Oh, thank you, Steve." "It did beat all," said Mrs. Underhill. "There Mrs. Whitney sat reading a novel " "Perhaps it was her French exercise," interrupted Steve, with a twinkle in his eye. "It was no such thing!
Grandmother thought it ought to be at home, instead. "She will want one in the fall," said Dolly, "to announce that she is really Miss Underhill, and ready for society. Home will be the place for that. And she will be getting acquainted with young people through the summer. She's never been anything but a little girl."
The boys knocked off his cap in the gutter and made up rhymes about him which they sang to any sort of tune. This was one: "Benjamin Franklin Underhill, Was a little boy too awfully still: Forty bears came out of the wood, And ate up the boy so awfully good." "Come out from under that hill," while some boy would reply, "Oh, he dassent! He's afraid his shadder'll meet him in the way."
The concluding phrase seems admirably chosen, when we consider the means of making people "tractable" which the magistrates of the Bay had in their hands, and were not slow to exercise, as Underhill himself had experienced.
