Hence, designating that mythical being as the only begotten of the Father, they personified him as God the Son, or second person in the sacred Triad; and recognizing the Sun as the ruling star, very appropriately made him the presiding genius of that luminary, under the title of God Sol.

It was a very pretty and novel sight. The men had been in the field planting, hoeing or weeding the farmer's triad of duties in the vegetable field and as they worked side by side, the questions of the day were discussed with freedom and with partisanship, but with good nature.

This local character of the Egyptian high gods was a source of weakness in these great beings, and never ceased to check their upward movement. The temple of a nome had, as a rule, three gods, and these formed a family, the chief god having his consort and the third being their son. Of these triads we may mention some: Amen-Mut-Chonsu are the triad of Thebes. Ptah-Sechet-Imhotep " Memphis.

He stood for King, Lords, and Commons, in spite of his personal grievances, harping the triad as vigorously as bard of old Britain.

On the whole, then, Anu's claim to reverence rests in Assyria as well as in Babylonia upon his position in the triad, and while Assyria is less influenced by the ancient system devised in Babylonia whereby Anu, Bel, and Ea come to be the representatives of the three kingdoms among which the gods are distributed, still Anu as a specific deity, ruling in his own right, remains a rather shadowy figure.

Mark Antony, knight of Venus, of Cleopatra; shifty Lepidus; bloody, yellow-haired Augustus, so worldly and so fine; you might find their mimic semblance, more easily than any suggestion of that threadbare triad of French adventurers, in the unfolding manhood of Jasmin, Amadee, and Camille.

Of these, the three principal are Brahma, Vishnu, and Siva, representing respectively the creating, preserving, and destroying principles; and their wives, Sereswutee, Lukshmee, and Dewee. These latter are the active powers which develop the principles represented by the triad. The divinity most commonly portrayed however, though not publicly worshipped, is Gunesh.

The effort she makes to compel her mind to work will bring a very real reward. It is a pitiful thing to see a woman at thirty or forty who has nothing to think about but herself and the affairs of her neighbors, and who never reads. If the mental side of the triad has grown weak through laziness and neglect, the girl may strengthen it.

Anu, Bel, and Ea are not in the list, and the tradition, or rather the dogma according to which they assign the names is evidently an attempt to make good this omission by placing them, as it were, beyond the reach of the calendar. In short, so far as the historical texts are concerned which reflect the popular beliefs, the triad represents a theological doctrine rather than a living force.

We encountered it at the very beginning of this book when we discussed the threefold psycho-physical order of man's being. In the days of an older intuitive nature-wisdom man knew of a basic triad of functions as well as he knew of the four elementary qualities.
