The stone mantelpiece is remarkably fine and of unusual character. But the most striking feature of the room is a square-headed arched recess, or niche, with pierced spandrels. What was its use? The arches east and west of the transepts and opening into the aisles are of the same character as those opening into the choir. Architecturally the style is after the ancient Roman, the motif being supplied by studies of the baths of Caracalla. The decorative designs in the vestibule are sculptured figures and accompanying insignia typifying the manufacture and use of machinery by man. The relief figures of the spandrels are forcefully executed. About the base of the pillars are friezes, symbolic of mechanical invention.
The central arch is larger and higher than the others, is gabled and surmounted by a richly jewelled cross. Though built of granite, a stone which is hard to work, its angles, and the casings of the doors and windows, are decorated with corner blocks cut into diamond facets. It is significant of the artistic conscientiousness in detail of those who planned the sculpture that these and other smaller pieces are so uniformly beautiful. The spandrels are formed of uprights and diagonals, the former being made of four angle-irons, and the latter of one angle-iron. On the top of the longitudinal girders are fixed cross pieces of single Barlow rails, upon which again are fastened two longitudinals of wood 12 in. square in section, and which in their turn carry the rails of the permanent way.
