The train is particularly comfortable and well managed, with sleeping-cars that bear comparison with the best in Europe, and a good dining-car; and it is necessary, for these men have a journey of a day and a night before reaching Khartoum, the capital of the Soudan, and the way lies right across barren desert, where the sand insidiously creeps in at every chink in spite of the closely shut windows.

I saw myself whirling all over Europe with my distinguished invalid in sleeping-cars de luxe. Anon we were crossing the Atlantic or lolling in punkah-induced breezes on the verandahs of Far Eastern hotels. It was a great profession, that of the experienced and successful courier.

First-class fares, with such sleeping-car luxuries as I have before described included, are just about our rates with sleeping-cars not included viz., three cents per mile. While Hindooism is thus passing away, but little progress is made with Islam.

No one took much notice of us; it must have been known that the train was empty, for there were no waiters from the buffet with café au lait or fruit, or brioches no porters about, or other officials. I had not expected to see any passengers come on board the train, a through express, made up of sleeping-cars and a supplementary charge on the tickets.

March, who kept her husband up to his early passion for the poet with a feeling that she was defending him from age in it, said that their silver wedding journey would not be complete; and he began himself to think that it would be interesting. They took a sleeping-car for Frankfort and they woke early as people do in sleeping-cars everywhere.

It delighted her to watch the deft porter make up the berths; she decided that the peculiar etiquette of sleeping-cars required that all travelers, male and female, should be driven to bed by lordly colored men in white jackets, and there left in cramped misery with nothing but an uncertain, rustling curtain between them and the world; this, too, at an hour when nobody is sleepy.

The best place to catch them is not out-of-doors, or even in drafty hallways, but in close, stuffy, infected hotel bedrooms, sleeping-cars, churches, and theatres. Two arguments in rebuttal will at once be brought forward, both apparently conclusive.

"Oh, no, I'm well enough, I've been traveling about. Those infernal sleeping-cars " His voice trailed off, and I saw him looking at my mother's picture, with the jonquils beneath. "That's curious!" he said, going closer. "It it looks almost like Lida Harvey." "My mother," I said simply. "Have you seen her lately?" "My mother?" I asked, startled. "No, Lida." "I saw her a few days ago." "Here?"

Departing from the usual American practice, the company owned and operated its own sleeping-cars, and maintained its own express and telegraph companies. Its car-shops provided much of its rolling stock. Grain elevators were built at terminal points. In the later years a systematic policy of developing its western lands was adopted.

Our journey begins at Stockholm, the capital of my native country. Leaving Stockholm by train in the evening, we travel all night in comfortable sleeping-cars and arrive next morning at the southernmost point of Sweden, the port of Trelleborg, where the sunlit waves sweep in from the Baltic Sea.
