We are separated from the fifteenth century by the Renaissance, the Reformation, and Tudor England, by the Civil War and the Restoration, by the "age of prose and reason," the keen-minded and rough-mannered eighteenth century, by the Industrial Revolution, and by that second Renaissance, the Victorian Age, during which the amenities of daily life were revolutionised.
Christ is the King of the kingdom, and His Cross is His throne, these truths being grasped revolutionised the Apostles' conceptions. They are as needful for us. From verse 4 onwards the last interview seems to be narrated. Probably it began in the city, and ended on the slopes of Olivet.
And when all was said and done, there was little that threw light on the Old Testament story, much less that supplemented it. But the latter part of the nineteenth century has witnessed discoveries which have revolutionised our conceptions of ancient Oriental history, and illuminated the pages of the Biblical narrative.
It was a fresh scrutiny of the facts in the light of a new conception that revolutionised human opinion on the subject. What, then, is the history, and what are the facts upon which the belief that religious experience brings man into contact with a kind of existence not given in ordinary experience, is based? The kind of answer that will be given to this question has already been indicated.
