There has been a tendency in recent years among Retriever breeders to fall into the common error of exaggerating a particular point, and of breeding dogs with a head far too fine and narrow it is what has been aptly called the alligator head lacking in brain capacity and power of jaw. A perfect head should be long and clean, but neither weak nor snipy.

"He's in the next room in the study. Open the door very gently he may be working and not want to be disturbed." I opened the door quietly and peeped in. The first thing I saw was an enormous black retriever dog sitting in the middle of the hearth-rug with his ears cocked up, listening to the Doctor who was reading aloud to him from a letter. "What is the Doctor doing?"

Then the monsoon freshened somewhat and the Retriever once more rolled lazily away on her course, with young Matt Peasley humming chanteys on her quarter-deck and pondering the mystery that confronts all mankind in their first adventure in fatherhood. Would it be a boy or a girl?

"Sure, you'll say in a minute, Nell. Come now, me darlint, and help me." Then ensued a pleasant task, one in which Rover especially evinced the keenest interest, the sagacious retriever watching their every movement with an attention that never faltered.

The imperious word "ought" seems merely to imply the consciousness of the existence of a rule of conduct, however it may have originated. Formerly it must have been often vehemently urged that an insulted gentleman OUGHT to fight a duel. We even say that a pointer OUGHT to point, and a retriever to retrieve game. If they fail to do so, they fail in their duty and act wrongly.

Colquhoun winged two wild ducks, which fell on the farther side of a stream; his retriever tried to bring over both at once, but could not succeed; she then, though never before known to ruffle a feather, deliberately killed one, brought over the other, and returned for the dead bird.

In fact, she hardly seems as if she could help doing so, and appears to think, like the naughty boy of the story, that, in spite of the beating, the fun was too great to forgo. "Sloe is always loose, but has a kennel to sleep in at nights in the stable-yard. Opposite to her kennel is chained another dog a retriever 'Duchess' by name, a lovely dog of a soft flaxen colour.

Straman says that in his time two millions of unoffending workmen in the various industries were once discharged without warning and promptly arrested as vagrants and deprived of their ears because a sulking canal-boatman had kicked his captain's dog into the water. And the dog was a retriever.

The Pointer, the Retriever, Bulldog, and the Terrier, differ very greatly, and yet there is every reason to believe that every one of these races has arisen from the same source, that all the most important races have arisen by this selective breeding from accidental variation.

"Perhaps. But we're quite unanimous." Mr Goble, like most theatrical managers, was not good at words of over two syllables. "You're what?" "We've talked it over, and we've all decided to do what I said." Mr Goble's hat shot off again, and gambolled away into the wings, with the stage-director bounding after it like a retriever. "Whose idea's this?" demanded Mr Goble.
