There had been elimination of the Texas-Pacific landgrant, which unsuccessfully had been claimed by the Southern Pacific. Then came the Reavis grant, one of the most monumental of attempted swindles ever known.
L. U. Reavis writes enthusiastically: "The more we consider the subject," says this author, "the more we are compelled to admit that the Mississippi is a wonderful river, and that no man can compute its importance to the American people.
Some people have to swallow a few front teeth before they kin learn anythin'." "Well, what call did he have to jump on me like that?" protested Lightfoot. "I wasn't doin' nothin'." "No, nothin' but singin' bawdy songs about his girl," sneered Reavis sarcastically. "His girl, rats!" retorted the cowboy, vainglorious even in defeat, "she's my girl, if she's anybody's!"
"The big, hulkin' brute," blubbered Lightfoot, sitting up and aggrievedly feeling of his front teeth, "jumpin' on a little feller like me an' he never give me no warnin', neither. You jest wait, I'll " "Aw, shut up!" growled Old Man Reavis, whose soul had long been harrowed by Lightfoot's festive ways. "He give you plenty of warnin', if you'd only listen.
Keep him chasin', and while the rest of the boys are gatherin' cattle Rufe and me will move a few sheep." "Well, say," broke in Ben Reavis impatiently, "where do us fellers come in on this play? I thought there was goin' to be a few shap lessons and a little night work."
"Well, you fellers see how many of my steers you can ketch, then," said Creede, "and I'll move them sheep myself leastways, me and Rufe." "All right," assented Reavis resignedly, "but you want to hurry up. I saw a cloud o' dust halfway to Hidden Water this afternoon."
The claim was unanimously rejected by the land court and on the same day Reavis was arrested on five indictments for conspiracy. He was convicted in January, 1895, and sentenced to six years in the penitentiary. After serving his sentence, he made a brief confession, telling that he had been "playing a game which to win meant greater wealth than that of Gould or Vanderbilt."
James Addison Reavis, a newspaper solicitor, claimed a tract 78 miles wide from a point at the junction of the Gila and Salt Rivers, eastward to beyond Silver City, N.M., on the basis of an alleged grant, of date December 20, 1748, by Fernando VI, King of Spain, to Senor Don Miguel de Peralta y Cordoba, who then was made Baron of the Colorados and granted 300 square leagues in the northern portion of the viceroyalty of New Spain.
