That bitter fanatic, Ross, calls the ranters 'a sort of beasts, who practiced sin that grace might abound. Many under that name were openly profligate; they denied the sacraments, but were disowned by the Quakers. It seems, from Bunyan, that they were infatuated with some idea that the grossest sins of the flesh did not injure the sanctity of the spirit! Ed.

He readily fixed upon a day, so I went over to luncheon; after which we began to talk. The curate, who was present, and who had heard some ranters shouting and screaming in the "shires," kept on every now and then putting in a word of caution to restrain the rector from admitting too much; for little by little he was yielding to me.

The coming of the Quakers to Boston in 1656, bringing with them as they did some of the very religious ideas that had caused Mrs. Hutchinson and John Wheelwright to be driven into exile, revived anew the old issue and roused the orthodox colonies to deny admission to ranters, heretics, Quakers, and the like.

The Ranters mingled a little truth with much error abused their Christian liberty and lived licentiously, and were a scandal to religion.

Some crowded in, shouting and yelling, through the open doors, while others swarmed up the pillars and pedestals of the front, hacking at the sculptured ornaments, and tugging at the grey old images which filled every niche. 'This must be stopped, said Saxon curtly. 'We cannot afford to insult and estray the whole Church of England to please a few hot-headed ranters.

Then the next thing that he is grieved with, is, because I said, there are none but a company of light notionists, ranters, with here and there a legalist, that was shaking in their principles, that were carried away by the Quakers, &c. And whereas thou sayest I am like the Pharisees, who said, none believe, but a company of poor people, which know not the law. Answ.

For the ranters deny it both in principle and practice, and the other in practice at least. There shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust. Having in the first place shewed you, that the wicked must arise; I shall in the next place, SECOND, Shew you the manner of their rising.

If I see a man hanging in stays, he shall sing it by himself!" So the Ranters sang till the sound went from the little dissenting Bethel on the shore up to the stately Kirk of the parish cinctured with its double acre of ancient grave-stones "I love Thy Kingdom, Lord, The house of Thine abode: The Church our blest Redeemer saved With His own precious blood.

They claimed each one to be GOD, founding their notion on such passages as 1 Corinthians 14:25, 'God is in you of a truth. Fox quaintly asked them whether it would rain the next day; and upon their answering that they could not tell, 'Then said I unto them, God can tell. Strange as it may appear, the Ranters had many followers, while numerous pious people were troubled by their impudence and perversion of Scripture, but more especially by their being a persecuted people.

After a very careful perusal of E. Burrough's answers to Bunyan, it is gratifying to find that the whole truth is set forth in the following pages; some of the facts are worthy of a careful notice. The Baptists and Independents had long existed in this country, and had published confessions of faith. The Ranters and Familists existed not as sects but in name, and soon disappeared.
