His knowledge of the simplicity of God's requirements in contrast with the hopeless maze of pharisaic traditions, and his insight into the characters with whom he had to deal, whether the sinless Jesus or the hypocritical Pharisees, show a man marvellously gifted by God who made good use of his gift.
But I had had my youthful passion and my tragic disappointment, as you know: I had looked far enough into what Thackeray used to call the cryptic mysteries to save me from the Scylla of dissipation, and yet preserved enough of natural nature to keep me out of the Pharisaic Charyb-dis.
He often quoted the passage in Isaiah, which says: "This people honor me with their lips, but their heart is far from me." Cf. The observance of the Sabbath was the principal point upon which was raised the whole edifice of Pharisaic scruples and subtleties. It was believed that Nature observed it; all intermittent springs were accounted "Sabbatical."
A person imbued with Mr. Mill's principle would feel the responsibility of censorship much more seriously; would reflect more carefully and candidly about the conduct or opinion of which he thought ill; would be more on his guard against pharisaic censoriousness, and that desire to be ever judging one another, which Milton well called the stronghold of our hypocrisy.
Withdrawal to regions of Tyre and Sidon: the Syrophœnician woman's daughter Matt. xv. 21-28; Mark vii. 24-30. Return through Decapolis Matt. xv. 29-31; Mark vii. 31-37. Pharisaic challenge in Galilee, and warning against the leaven of the Pharisees Matt xv. 39 to xvi. 12; Mark viii. 10-21. Cure of blind man near Bethsaida Mark viii. 22-26.
Hitherto their hearts had been like clay, and the Pharisaic teaching, as far as it had reached them, had been like fire: the clay in this furnace grew aye the harder. But now a new sound from the lips of a public teacher saluted their ears. They could not throw these words back in the speaker's face, if they would; and they would not if they could. They permitted themselves to be taken, and led.
Luke, however, characteristically omits what is prominent in Matthew, the polemic against Pharisaic righteousness, and the contrast between the moral teaching of Christ and that of the law.
These consequences, Socinians, to be consistent, must allow, and which impious arrogation of Divinity in Christ, according to their faith, as well as his false assumption of a community of 'glory' with the Father, 'before the world was, even they will be necessitated completely to admit the exoneration of the Jews, according to their law, in crucifying one, who 'being a man, 'made himself God! But in the Christian, rather than in the Socinian, or Pharisaic view, all these objections vanish, and harmony succeeds to inexplicable confusion.
This is one of the most important discoveries of recent New Testament criticism. In the earliest Epistles those to the Thessalonians we have the naïve picture of Messiah coming on the clouds, which, as we now know, was part of the Pharisaic tradition. In the central group the Christology is far more complex.
Exposed, humiliated, doomed, the home throws out a hundred pleas to us. And the Pharisaic community passes by on the other side of the way, in fear of a falling brick. Down come the walls of the home, as quickly as pickaxes can send them. Down they crumble, piecemeal, into the foundations, and are carted away.
