Carter's drawings in Gray's 'Anatomy. The hand is drawn to a larger scale than the foot. The line 'a a' in the hand indicates the boundary between the carpus and the metacarpus; 'b b' that between the latter and the proximal phalanges; 'c c' marks the ends of the distal phalanges.

Certain ligaments are subjected to strain more than are others and therefore, when so involved, frequently cause lameness. Because of the leverage afforded by the transverse diameter of the foot, when an animal is made to travel over uneven road surfaces, considerable strain is brought to bear on the collateral ligaments of the phalanges.

The poor religious excused themselves by saying that I had ill-treated their porter, which made my noble friends laugh; but I did not laugh, for my wound was very painful. However I was immediately moved into two of their best guest-rooms. The ball had pierced my hand by the metacarpus under the index finger, and had broken the first phalanges.

The presence of supernumerary digits, and the absence of certain phalanges, must be determined at an early embryonic period the tendency to profuse bleeding is at least congenital, as is probably colour-blindness yet these peculiarities, and other similar ones, are often limited in their transmission to one sex; so that the rule that characters, developed at an early period, tend to be transmitted to both sexes, here wholly fails.

"Your ball broke my first phalanges. Here it is you see, flattened by my bone. Allow me to return it to you." "I am sorry to say I can't return yours, which I suppose remains on the field of battle." "You seem to be getting better, thank God!" "The wound is healing painfully. If I had imitated you I should no longer be in the land of the living; I am told you made an excellent dinner?"

It increases the leverage of important muscles, and protects the front of the knee joint, which is, from its position, much exposed to injury. The Foot. The bones of the foot, 26 in number, consist of the tarsal bones, the metatarsal, and the phalanges. The tarsal bones are the seven small, irregular bones which make up the ankle.

The diagnosis of contraction of tendons is an easy matter because of the fact that relations between the phalanges are constantly changed with tendinous contraction. If one bears in mind the attachments and function of the digital flexors, no difficulty is encountered in recognizing contraction of either tendon.

"Well, look at your drawings. The egg-patches are on the dorsal surface of the scapula, the humerus, and the bones of the fore-arm. But here you have shown six of the bones of the hand: two metacarpals, the os magnum, and three phalanges; and they all have egg-patches on the palmar surface. Therefore the hand was lying palm upwards." "But the hand may have been pronated."
