"The girl and the treasure were both stolen from me by a rascally panglima, Ninaka," said Muda Saffir, seeing that it would be as well to simulate friendship for the white man for the time being at least there would always be an opportunity to use a kris upon him in the remote fastness of the interior to which Muda Saffir would lead them.
But scarcely had he reached his home, than he learned, to his dismay, that Che’ Wan Âhman and Che’ Wan Da, with a large force, were only a few miles behind him at Bâtu Nĕring. Pănglîma Râja Sĭbîdi, with all his people, had made common cause with the enemy, whose ranks were further swelled by the very men who had so lately been disbanded by Wan Bong on his journey up river.
The Datu agreed, and Panglima delivered himself of a wise harangue, to the effect that, 'the last campaign, when they had a fort, how had the enemy fired then? stabbed them, speared them, &c. &c.; and without a fort, assaulting! how could it be expected they should succeed? how unreasonable they should go at all! But even his stolid head seemed to comprehend the sarcasm when I asked him how many men had been killed during all this severe fighting.
Be this how it may, certain it is that Pănglîma Râja Sĕbîdi went to Wan Bong, where he lay camped at Kuâla Tĕmbĕling, and assured him that after the defeat at Tanjong Gâtal, the royal forces had dispersed, and that the Pĕkan Râjas were now in full flight.
Tŭngku Mûsa, the Sultân's great uncle, was there to act as the King's mouthpiece, but he was in as great fear as any of them. At last the Sultân said: 'Well, the day has dawned, why does no one go forth to kill To’ Kâya Bîji Dĕrja? Tŭngku Mûsa turned upon Tŭngku Pănglîma, 'Go thou and slay him, he said. Tŭngku Pănglîma said, 'Why dost thou not go thyself or send Pahlâwan?
Williamson returned from Sanpro, where I sent him to watch a party of natives who had gone among the Dyaks; the Panglima Sadome, of the tribe of Sanpro, came with him, and brought the lamentable account of the death of eight more Dyaks, cut off by the Sakarrans.
At the top of the notched log he was met by Ninaka, who, with horror-wide eyes, looked down upon the fearsome monstrosities that lumbered awkwardly up the rude ladder in the wake of the agile Dyaks and the young white giant. "What does it mean?" whispered the panglima to Barunda. "These are now my friends," replied Barunda. "Where is Muda Saffir?" Ninaka jerked his thumb toward the river.
Thus at length they won to Pĕkan without mishap; and thereafter they were suffered to remain in peace, no further and immediate attempts being made upon their lives. To’ Râja or Pănglîma Prang as he was still called by the King and the Court Faction remained at the capital a prisoner in all but the name.
I don't know what we ate and I don't care to know though I admit that I had some uneasy suspicions but, with the uncompromising eye of the old Panglima fixed sternly upon us, we did our best to convince him that we appreciated his cuisine. But the dancing which followed made us forget what we had eaten.
Inactivity followed; two or three useless forts were built, and Budrudeen, much to my regret and the detriment of the cause, was recalled. "Among the straggling arrivals I may mention Panglima Dallam, with a number of men, consisting of the Orang Bentulu, Meri Muka, and Kayan, Dyaks from the interior. Our house or, as it originally stood, shed deserves a brief record.
