To this process Metchnikoff gave the name of phagocytosis, and he recognised two forms of phagocytes: the microphages, which are the polymorpho-nuclear leucocytes of the blood; and the macrophages, which include the larger hyaline leucocytes, endothelial cells, and connective-tissue corpuscles.
It is something that I think we ought to guard ourselves against as a sort of mental sclerosis which must end fatally long before we have reached the patriarchal age which that unbelieving believer Metchnikoff says we can attain if we fight off physical sclerosis.
If Metchnikoff is right and to a certain extent he must be right the decay of age is due to changing organic processes that may be checked and delayed and modified by suitable food and regimen. He holds out hope of a new phase in the human cycle, after the phase of struggle and passion, a phase of serene intellectual activity, old age with all its experience and none of its infirmities.
If God is the "ultimate fount of being to which all that is highest in us can be traced," who or what is the ultimate fount to which all that is lowest in us can be traced? Let us have the names of the two ultimate founts of being, and also to what still more ultimate founts these founts may be traced. In our opinion Dr. Adler has failed to do justice to Prof. Metchnikoff.
In his book, "The Nature of Man," Professor Metchnikoff quotes some statistics, now very nearly fifty years old, showing the age at first marriage in various European countries.
