Mr. R. R. Marett, who has a good practical acquaintance with his subject, had in the Hibbert Journal for October 1918 an article on "The Primitive Medicine Man" in which he shows that the latter is as a rule anything but a fool and a knave although like 'medicals' in all ages he hocuspocuses his patients occasionally!

The students of those polite days insisted on retaining their hats in the class-room. Duelling was still a possibility; so much so that when two medicals fell to fisticuffs in Adam Square, it was seriously hinted that single combat would be the result.

'Oh yes, Toddy, you do! 'Don't you call me that confounded name, growled Macfarlane. 'Hear him! Did you ever see the lads play knife? He would like to do that all over my body, remarked the stranger. 'We medicals have a better way than that, said Fettes. 'When we dislike a dead friend of ours, we dissect him. Macfarlane looked up sharply, as though this jest were scarcely to his mind.

Having thoroughly taken in the situation, Mac turned again to business. Some of the fellows were digging trenches on the enemy side of the plateau, the medicals were bandaging the wounded, Turkish and New Zealand, in a sheltered spot in the scrub, and Mac was told off to disarm and guard several hundred prisoners who were trooping up the steep slope from the rear.

Have you found those six brave medicals, John Eglinton asked with elder's gall, to write Paradise Lost at your dictation? The Sorrows of Satan he calls it. Smile. Smile Cranly's smile. First he tickled her Then he patted her Then he passed the female catheter. For he was a medical Jolly old medi... I feel you would need one more for Hamlet. Seven is dear to the mystic mind.

And, meanwhile, they could use him to whip the Rank Privates into shape. He had left the offices of Baron Haer to go through the red tape involved in being signed up on a temporary basis in the Vacuum Tube Transport forces, and reentered the confusion of the outer offices where the Lowers were being processed and given medicals.

He used to visit in our wards, and as we had a couple of fives courts, a game which takes little tune and gives much exercise, we used to have an afternoon off together, once a week, when he came over to hospital. Neither of these splendid men were dignitaries in those days, or I am afraid they would have found us medicals much more stand-offish.
