Suddenly there came sailing in from Amherstburg and anchored off Fort Erie two British armed brigs, the Detroit which had been surrendered by Hull, and the Caledonia which had helped to subdue the American garrison at Mackinac. Elliott had no ships ready for action, but he was not to be daunted by such an obstacle.

Manitou, hearing of these doings, restored them to the island and banished the devil, who fell to a world of evil spirits underground, where he became the father of the white race, and has ever since persecuted the Indians by proxy. On the same island of Mackinac the English had a fort, the garrison of which was massacred in 1763.

His successes in the West, besides rallying the Indians by thousands to his support, had for the time so assured that frontier as to enable him to concentrate his efforts on the East; while the existing British naval superiority on both lakes, Erie and Ontario, covered his flanks, and facilitated transportation communications from Kingston to Niagara, and thence to Malden, Detroit, Mackinac, and the Great West.

Fort Mackinac was glittering white on the heights above them, and half-way up a paved ascent leading to the sally-port sauntered 'Tite Laboise. All the voyageurs saw her; and strict as was the discipline of the yard, they directly expected trouble. The packing, however, went on with vigor.

There is no telling. Sometimes the strait clears very soon, sometimes not. Maybe two, three days. Rosalin sit down on a stone. I tell her we can make camp, and show signals to Mackinac, and when the ice permit, a boat will be sent. She is crying, and I say her lady will be well. 'He's devoting himself to Miss Augusta; she sings "The Harp that once " to him every night. 'O, does she? I thought, not without a shade of vexation. But the vague anxiety vanished. The real spring came at last, the rapid, vivid spring of Mackinac. Almost in a day the ice moved out, the snows melted, and the northern wild-flowers appeared in the sheltered glens.

Mackinac, Detroit, Kingston, Montreal these four places, together with adequate development of naval strength on the lakes constituted the essential elements of the military situation at the opening of hostilities. Why? Mackinac and Detroit because, being situated upon extremely narrow parts of the vital chain of water communication, their possession controlled decisively all transit.

Passing "Old Mackinac," on the main land, which forms the southern border of the straits, we soon came out into the broad waters of Lake Michigan. Every traveller, and every reader of our history, is familiar with the incidents connected with the taking of the old fort by the Indians, in the days of Pontiac.

Early in the Mackinac summer Owen Cunning took his shoemaker's bench and all his belongings to that open cavern on the beach called the Devil's Kitchen, which was said to derive its name from former practices of the Indians. They roasted prisoners there. The inner rock retained old smoke-stains.
