The soft grey folds of her dress, the still more softened grey of the hair, and the deep grey of the beautiful eyes, none of these quiet shades was dull and fixed. A delicate play of light and shadow made them vital, as the grey of the lagoons is vital, when there are clouds before the sun, and a strange, mystic luminousness traverses their tranquil spaces.

Its quickly-spreading rays were driving back the forces of the enemy. With fine generalship it was following up the victory with renewed attacks. The form of the Pharaoh was only dimly visible. Its luminousness had disappeared. It was a shadow in the light.

Again he asked himself, what did it all mean? He waited, looking down upon her tired eyelids, and at the row of lashes lying upon each cheek, whose natural roundness showed itself in singular perfection now that the customary pink had given place to a pale luminousness caught from the surrounding atmosphere.

She was beautiful as a new marvellous flower opened at his knees, a paradisal flower she was, beyond womanhood, such a flower of luminousness. Yet something was tight and unfree in him. The pallor of his countenance had assumed, if possible, a more ghastly line but the luminousness of his eye had utterly gone out. The once occasional huskiness of his tone was heard no more; and a tremulous quaver, as if of extreme terror, habitually characterized his utterance.

So slight, so fragile and sweet a woman! with a precious world of love pent up in her heart . . . yet alone quite alone on this night of splendid luminousness and majestic suggestions of infinity, an infinity so monstrous and solitary to the one delicate creature, whose whole soul craved for a perfect love. Alas, for this "perfect love," of which all the dearest women dream!

The luminousness gone from her face, there were cruel revelations. "Blast my soul!" the old man muttered angrily, not far from tearfully. She looked up and down the noisy, dirty, parched street, then back to the empty window. For a minute she just stood there that was the worst minute of all.
