So, more than ever, the excited rejoicing became a cordial expression of delight at the fooling of the purpose of a generally hated act. This sentiment was expressed by O'Brien before his bar full of men, among whom were many of those responsible for the defeat of the police. He addressed himself personally to Stormy Longton with the certainty of absolute sympathy.

Stormy Longton and the Kid arose from their table and demanded a final drink. O'Brien served them and they took their departure. "I sort of fancy I saw him once," said O'Brien, in answer to Holy Dick's remark. He spoke loudly, and his eyes again took in the silent Charlie in their roving glance. At that instant the poker game broke up, and the men gathered at the bar.

And the fools up in Westminster want you to put in fans here and fans there the Longton fools have.... And then eating their dinners out of it all the time!"... At high tea that night my uncle was still holding out against evening dinner Sibyl and Gertrude made what was evidently a concerted demand for a motor-car. "You've got your mother's brougham," he said, "that's good enough for you."

At Longton, nearly everybody went into raptures over the "new doctrine;" Mormonism fairly took the place by storm; it caught up and entranced old and young, married and single, pious and godless; it even spread like a sacred rinderpest amongst the Wesleyans, who at that time were very strong in Longton captivating leaders, members, and some of the scholars in fine style; and the chapel of this body was so emptied by the Mormon crusade, that it was found expedient to reduce it internally and set apart some of it for school purposes.

His eyes scanned every face, and then, when his search was completed, something like excitement took possession of him. Charlie Bryant was absent. So were his associates, Kid Blaney, Stormy Longton, Holy Dick, and Cranky Herefer. Where were Pete Clancy and Nick Devereux, Kate Seton's hired men? They were all absent. So was Kate herself. Ah, yes, he had heard she had gone to Myrtle.

At another table Kid Blaney was amusing himself with a pack of cards, betting on the turn-up with the well-known badman, Stormy Longton. For the rest there was a group of citizens lounging against the bar, still discussing with the proprietor the possibilities of the newly created situation.

Stormy Longton glanced over quickly, while the kid shuffled the cards. "Who cares a curse for red-coats?" he snorted fiercely, his keen, scarred face flushing violently, his steel-gray eyes shining like silver tinsel. "If Fyles and his boys butt in there'll be a dandy bunch of lead flying around Rocky Springs. Maybe it won't drop from the sky neither.

Social intercourse centred very largely upon the church or chapel, and the chapels were better at bringing people together than the Establishment to which my cousins belonged. Their chief outlet to the wider world lay therefore through the acquaintances they had formed at school, and through two much less prosperous families of relations who lived at Longton and Hanley.

Shall I point out to him the absurdity of fixing on this one man when there are such men as O'Brien, and Stormy Longton, and my two boys, and Holy Dick, and Kid Blaney in the place? Shall I? Shall I tell him of the things I've found out? Yes, Peter, I will, if he'll promise me to put Charlie out of his mind. But not unless. Eh? Not unless." The man shook his head.

At Longton I preached an hour and a quarter to about five thousand people in the open air, and had a lengthy discussion after. How I slept, I forget. I believe I was feverish through the night. In the morning my nose bled freely, and I was better. I walked six, eight, or ten miles daily, carrying my bag and books along with me, and preaching, or lecturing and discussing, every night.
