The greatest part of this information concerns the Rio Grande Pueblos. A careful investigation of the matrimonial and baptismal registers will yield data concerning the clans and indications of the primitive rules of marriage, while the "Libros de Fabrica" contain interesting data on the churches of the Rio Grande valley.
Stephanorum Historia, vitas ipsorum ac libros complectens. London, 1709. Senilia was published in 1742. The line to which Johnson refers is, 'Mel, nervos, fulgur, Carteret, unus, habes, p. 101. In another line, the poet celebrates Colley Cibber's Muse the Musa Cibberi: 'Multa Cibberum levat aura. p. 50. See Macaulay's Essays, ed. 1843, i. 367.
You can pay it back perhaps some time or other; if you did not, it would not make much difference. I am pretty much alone in the world, and except a book now and then Aut liberos aut libros, as our valiant heretic has it, you ought to know a little Latin, Myrtle, but never mind I have not much occasion for money.
Omne bene Sine poena Tempus est ludendi; Venit hora, Absque mora Libros deponendi. Old Holiday School Song.
See ch. xviii. section 10. In the second Report of the Rota, p. 477 quoted by Benedict XIV., De Canoniz. iii. 26, n. 12, and by the Bollandists in the Acta, 1315 we have these words, and they throw great light on the text: "Sunt et alli testes de visu affirmantes quod quando beata Teresa scribebat libros, facies ejus resplendebat."
Venit hora Absque mora Libros deponendi. IN the preceding paper I have made some general observations on the Christmas festivities of England, and am tempted to illustrate them by some anecdotes of a Christmas passed in the country; in perusing which I would most courteously invite my reader to lay aside the austerity of wisdom, and to put on that genuine holiday spirit which is tolerant of folly and anxious only for amusement.
The Libros de Fabrica, in which are recorded items bearing on the economic side of church administration, are usually less important; still they contain data that should not be neglected, for very often minor points deserve as much attention as salient ones.
Ven. 1543, 12mo. Relacion de Don Juan de Persia, en III Libros. Vallad. 1604. 4to. Chardin, Voyages en Persie, et autres lieux de l'Orient. Amsterd. 3 vols. 4to. 1711.
Unhappy race! how sweetly does St. Austin say of them "Librarii nostri facti sunt, quemadmodum solent libros post dominos ferre."
Whether his excuse would have been sufficient I do not know. He was never asked for it. He came into school just in time to hear old Lovel, the Tory schoolmaster, say, "War's begun and school's done. Dimittite libros" which means, "Put away your books." They put them away, and had a vacation of a year and nine months thereafter, before the school was open again.
