Clumps of bamboo as big as a city lot and towering to the sky, with the yellow allamanda framing the bungalows, and a tangle of bananas, lantana, tafeie, cocoas, and a hundred other fruits, flowers and creepers, made the whole journey through a paradise. Around many cocoanut-palms were bands of tin or zinc ten or twenty feet from the earth. Every available piece of thin metal was used for this.

A native of the United States, 1763. This can be recommended as a distinct and beautiful shrub, with cymes of white flowers that are produced in plenty. The leaves are dark green, smooth, and shining, and strongly veined, while the bark is ash-coloured, and the berries bright blue. V. LANTANA. Wayfaring Tree.

The native is very close to the ground. The lantana, with its yellow and magenta flowerets, umbrella ferns, and aihere, the herbe de vache, and the bohenia, used by the Tahitians for an eye lotion, were all about.

The whole slope, for half a mile, was covered with a dense scrub of Lantana bushes. "There," I cried, pointing at the scrub, "there, without doubt, your wounded 'bag' is lying."

What I had thought a palace lost in the jungle, fit to receive its King should he enter, was now a broken hall of State; the shattered pillars were festooned with waving weeds, the many coloured lantana grew between the fallen blocks of marble. Even the sculptures on the walls were difficult to decipher.

It had been densely covered with lantana scrub, and clearing it and grubbing it out had been an heroic task. The lantana takes complete possession of the soil, grows about four or five feet high, and makes a network of roots in the soil that defies anything but a steam plow.

With welcome relief on his face, he removed the lei hala from his neck, and, with a sniff and a sigh, tossed it into concealment in the thick lantana by the side of the road. "But the shin-bone of Laulani?" I queried softly. He remained silent while a mile of pasture land fled by us and yielded to caneland. "I have it now," he at last said.

No canoe rises the waves save the grey feather-boat of the wild duck, and the majestic circling hawk is the only fisherman. "It was like this when Cortes saw it!" I say. "It was like this when God made it!" says Mrs. Steele, under her breath. The train stops by the lake and we gather wild Lantana and many a new flower during the few minutes' stay.

This resembles our native V. Lantana, with dense clusters of white blossoms succeeded by black berries. China, 1844. This is a Chinese species, but one that cannot be depended on as hardy enough to withstand our most severe winters. It has very large heads or panicles of white neutral flowers.

After breakfast I followed his advice, with results so pleasing that I found myself turning that corner again and again as long as I remained in Tallahassee. The deep sides of the gulches were draped with pendent lantana branches full of purple flowers, or, more beautiful still, with a profusion of fragrant white honeysuckle.
