I had two sleds with me which were made in Juneau specially for the work of getting over the mountains and down the lakes on the ice. With these I succeeded in bringing about a ton and a-half to the lakes, but found that the time it would take to get all down in this way would seriously interfere with the programme arranged with Dr.
Presently we ran back into the maze of fiords and land-locked lakes, and resumed the same old round of daily and nightly experiences. Juneau, Douglas Island, Fort Wrangell, and several fishing stations were revisited. They seemed a little stale to us, and we were inclined to snub them slightly.
The start from Juneau to the gold fields should not be made before the beginning of April. Our friends had struck that date, but the headlong rush did not begin until some time later. One of the principal routes is from Seattle to St. Michael, on the western coast of Alaska, and then up that mighty river whose mouth is near, for nearly two thousand more miles to Dawson City.
Juneau, Skagway, and Cordova meant nothing to him, except that they were Alaska. He yearned for the still farther north, the wide tundras, and the mighty achievement that lay ahead of him there. His blood sang to the surety of it now, and for that reason he was not sorry he had spent seven months of loneliness in the States.
Since they would find a good raft necessary, axes, hatchets, hunting-knives, nails, one hundred and fifty feet of rope, and two Juneau sleds were purchased. To these were added snow-shoes, a strong duck-tent, fishing-tackle, snow-glasses to protect themselves against snow-blindness, rubber blankets, mosquito-netting, tobacco, and a few minor articles.
You will not see any large game whatever on your trip from Juneau to Dawson City, therefore do not take any firearms along. You will find a list of the implements for the miner in the chapter on "Outfit for Miners." The miners here are a very mixed class of people. They represent many nationalities and come from all climates. Their lives are certainly not enviable.
Let him git all the good out of the theft he can, say I." Dyea is at the head of navigation, and is the timber line, being a hundred miles to the northwest of Juneau. It is at the upper fork of what is termed Lynn Canal, the most extensive fiord on the coast.
One day he pointed to the rigging with an unsteady forefinger, then, laying the same finger doubtfully upon his lips, said to Strokher: "A ship?" "Quite so, quite so, me boy." "Yes," muttered Nickerson absently, "a ship of course." Hardenberg expected to make Juneau on a Thursday. Wednesday afternoon Slick Dick came to him. He seemed never more master of himself. "How did I come aboard?" he asked.
The Norris Glacier, about two miles below the Taku is a good example of a glacier in the first stage of decadence. The Taku River enters the head of the inlet a little to the east of the glaciers, coming from beyond the main coast range. All the tourists are delighted at seeing a grand glacier in the flesh. The scenery is very fine here and in the channel at Juneau.
"He arrived this morning, but we've barely seen him." "I left Appleton in Juneau. He'll be down on the next boat." "Appleton? Who's he?" Dr. Gray inquired. "Oh, he's a new member of the order initiated last month. He's learning to be a sleep-hater, like the rest of us. He's recording the right-of-way." "What's in the air? None of us know.
