There are sledges of every size and shape, some pushed by skaters, others drawn by horses, others propelled by means of two iron-tipped sticks which are worked by the person seated in the sledge. One sees carts and carriages taken off of their wheels and mounted on two boards, on which they glide with the same rapidity as the other sleds.

"We have our iron-tipped spears," said Cyrus Harding. "Keep on your guard, and forward!" "It is becoming more and more interesting," murmured Gideon Spilett in the sailor's ear, who nodded. The bullets from the Chinamen's rifles and the Bhutanese matchlocks spattered the rocks or the face of the cliff; but the archers began to shoot almost vertically into the air from their strong bamboo bows, and several iron-tipped, four-feathered arrows dropped behind the cover, one missing Wargrave by a hand's breadth. Fearing for Muriel he tried to shield her with his body.
