Then the Suffet put his hand into the hands of the ten Barbarians in turn, and pressed their thumbs; then he rubbed it on his garment, for their viscous skin gave a rude, soft impression to the touch, a greasy tingling which induced horripilation. Afterwards he said to them: "You are really all the chiefs of the Barbarians, and you have sworn for them?" "Yes!" they replied.
And there he saw a lovely maiden of blazing beauty and like unto another Sri herself; of faultless and pearly teeth and decked with celestial ornaments, and attired in garments of fine texture that resembled in splendour the filaments of the lotus. And the monarch, on beholding that damsel, became surprised, and his raptures produced instant horripilation.
Sambhrama here means, probably, joy, or that gratification which shows itself in horripilation. It may also mean alacrity. Upavasa here, as explained by the commentator, is used for Indriyajaya or subjugation of the senses. He who takes his meals at the proper hours is said to observe fasts.
But he trembled at the task assigned him, as he returned to the toil of his studio, saying: "How shall any miserable man render in clay the quivering of flesh to an Idea, the inexplicable horripilation of a Thought? Shall a man venture to mock the magic of that Eternal Moulder by whose infinite power a million suns are shapen more readily than one small jar might be rounded upon my wheel?"
When Jamrkan heard these words, the ears of his heart were opened; his skin shuddered with horripilation and he said, "O my lord, what shall I say that I may become of you and that this mighty Lord may accept of me?"
"By George! You've got pep, if ever a girl had I'll wager you pulled your friend out of the parlor-car and held her up! Some horripilation, eh?" breezily. "Now now what have you and I ever done that the Fates should wish this on to us that's what I'd like to know?"
Somehow, at that awful time of the train-wreck, when we were in the icy water, Una and I, before the boy came, the big boy who saved us, through through all the 'horripilation', as he called it, I seemed to see a light; the the Light of Light Eternal, as we sing God and I knew, oh-h!
But vainly for days, for weeks, for months, for season after season, did he strive; vainly also he prayed unto the gods to aid him; vainly he besought the Spirit of the Furnace, crying: "O thou Spirit of Fire, hear me, heed me, help me! how shall I, a miserable man, unable to breathe into clay a living soul, how shall I render in this inanimate substance the aspect of flesh made to creep by the utterance of a Word, sentient to the horripilation of a Thought?"
"'Down on your knees, commanded the minister. Everyone obeyed. The clergyman prayed aloud, when in a few moments, piercing shrieks were heard issuing from the oven. The whole company were in a state of horripilation. The clergyman ceased praying. He simply said with quivering and pale lips: 'The book is burning. "The cries ceased. The door of the oven was opened. The book was reduced to ashes."
