Not all: others, just as earnest, just as eager, just as chivalrous, sprang from the masses. Yet the gently-reared preponderate. It is a common Tory taunt to say that the battle is one between the Haves and the Have-nots. That is by no means true. It is between the selfish Haves, on one side, and the unselfish Haves, who wish to see something done for the Have-nots, on the other.
"Oh, is it you, little Findelkind? Have you run off from school? Be off with you home! I haves mouths enough to feed here." Findelkind went away, and began to learn that it is not easy to be a prophet or a hero in one's own country. He trotted a mile farther, and met nothing. At last he came to some cows by the wayside, and a man tending them.
And I have no hesitation in saying that any violent movement would infallibly encounter an overwhelming resistance, and that any movement which was inspired by mere class prejudice, or by a desire to gain a selfish advantage, would encounter from the selfish power of the "haves" an effective resistance which would bring it to sterility and to destruction.
Of course it means an inroad on rent and speculative profit, but that is not an immeasurable calamity. So much, by way of introduction, on the moral and economic aspects of the matter. Our special object is rather theological. We desire to notice the part which religion plays in the struggle between capital and labor; or, more properly perhaps, between the "haves" and the "have-nots."
The "have-nots" cheered him, but the "haves" shivered at his coming, for every thinking man knew that it implied war with Europe. Napoleon saw the danger of relying merely on malcontents and sought to arouse a truly national feeling.
"Before your majesty marches to Bavaria," said Kaunitz inclining his bead, "her majesty, the empress, must sign the edict which shall apprise her subjects and the world of the step we meditate. I haves drawn it up, and it awaits her majesty's approbation and signature." The prince then drew from his muff a paper, which he presented to the empress. Maria Theresa perused it with sorrowful eyes.
The perennial struggle between the "haves" and the "have nots" the rich and the poor is, unfortunately, carried on by those engaged in it with a view to their own interests and not with a view to the good of society as a whole.
I could not keep back the tears. Presently: "Halt!" commanded the Brigadier. "Front face!" "Right dress!" "Stand at ease!" "One two three. In unison RECITE!" It was fine. In one noble volume of sound of all the fifty-seven Haves in the Italian language burst forth in an exalting and splendid confusion. Then came commands: "About face! Eyes front! Helm alee hard aport!
So, in the end, above ground you must have the Haves, pursuing pleasure and comfort and beauty, and below ground the Have-nots, the Workers getting continually adapted to the conditions of their labour. Once they were there, they would no doubt have to pay rent, and not a little of it, for the ventilation of their caverns; and if they refused, they would starve or be suffocated for arrears.
He was so frightfully tired of life and its struggles; tired of being a Have-Not. To help the other Have-Nots, to put pleasant things into their hands as far as might be, seemed to Peter at this moment the thing for which one existed. It is obviously the business of the Have-Nots to do that for one another; for the Haves do not know or understand.
