The name of Miska Hauser is seldom mentioned in these days, and yet it was once known all over the world. No virtuoso of his time travelled more extensively, and few created more enthusiasm than did Hauser. He was born in Pressburg, Hungary, in 1822, and became a pupil of Böhm and of Mayseder at Vienna, also of Kreutzer and Sechter.
A yell of excruciating pain rang through the hotel, and he sprang back, releasing his hold upon the cord. Then next moment, when I switched on the light, I found the man Hauser dancing about my room, his face covered with his hands blinded, and his countenance burnt by the dose of sulphuric acid I had, in self-defense, squirted full into it.
His mind was in a torpor, and, placed suddenly amid, to him, most exciting scenes, it was long before he could understand the simplest phenomena of Nature. The unfolding of his mind was exactly like that of a child. Feuerbach, in his book on Caspar Hauser, gives the main features of this gradual development. We can only pick out a few.

His mother's family were German, and the Hauser name is over six hundred years old in Vienna, Austria. Jaeger in 1770 at Tubingen describes the metastasis of milk to the umbilicus, Haen to the back, and Schurig to a wound in the foot. Knackstedt has seen an abscess of the thigh which contained eight pounds of milk. Hauser gives the history of a case in which the kidneys secreted milk vicariously.

"I also went on of course, considering this manoeuvre on the part of the Russians as rather in the nature of bluffing. If they do not come, then we can treat with the Ukrainians, who should be in Brest by now. "In Vienna I saw, among politicians, Baernreither, Hauser, Wekerle, Seidler, and some few others.
Amos Botsford, Samuel Cummings and Frederick Hauser. They were furnished with the following "That on their arrival in Nova Scotia they apply themselves to discover whether a Tract or Tracts of Land free from all disputed titles, either with the Indians or former Grantees, can be found sufficient to accommodate the Loyalists and their Families who shall remove thither.
O God! to die thus with contumely and disgrace!" The German is still more expressive, "Ach, Gott! ach, Gott! so abkratzen müssen mit Schimpf und Schande!" Such was the life of Caspar Hauser.
Then the house was shaken by a loud voice, and inside, behind the side board which was overturned, they saw a man standing upright, with his hair falling on his shoulders and a beard descending to his breast, with shining eyes, and nothing but rags to cover him. They did not recognize him, but Louise Hauser exclaimed: "It is Ulrich, mother."
