This name comes from that of the first publisher of such records, Luke Hansard, who was printer to the House of Commons from 1798 until he died, in 1828. His family continued to print the reports as late as 1889, and though the work is now shared by other firms, the name is still kept. Not only books but musical instruments are frequently called after their makers.
The whole speech is an admirable example of Disraeli's gift of irresponsible paradox. Hansard, 3 June, 1839. Ibid. 30 May, 1844. Hansard, 16 January, 1838. Elgin-Grey Correspondence: Grey to Elgin, 8 August, 1849. Hansard, 30 May, 1844.
The records of Hansard spoil a story which Redmond was fond of telling that he took his oath and his seat, made his maiden speech and was suspended all in the same evening. In point of fact he took his seat that Wednesday afternoon, when the House sat for a few hours only and adjourned again. Next day news came in that Davitt had been arrested in Ireland. Mr.
We think that the spirit of the Act of 1903 must be observed in the case of pending agreements, but it must not be departed from in the case of future agreements." Hansard, 1909, vol. vii. No. 93, cols. 1542, 1543. Mr. Bonar Law confirms this pledge.
"In fine, as I was somewhat confused; and anxious, above all, to keep him from exploding with the secret, I cannot remember everything, But Derschau, who was more at his ease, will be able to give you a full account. Whereupon to bed. This Hansard Report went off direct to Prince Eugene; and ought to have been a warning to the high Vienna heads and him.

Works, ii. 396. 4 Am.
It is very easy to bring a volume of Hansard to the House, to read a few sentences of a speech made in very different circumstances, and to say, "Last year you were for pacifying England by concession: this year you are for pacifying Ireland by coercion. How can you vindicate your consistency?"
One day the passage is hopelessly buried in Hansard and I cannot find it, but I remember the occasion very vividly Sir John rose at the opening of the day's proceedings and addressed a few grave and measured words to the Opposition.

Talking of this new departure with one of the oldest members of the House, he tells me a delightful story, which I have never found recalled in print, and it is too good to be buried in the pages of Hansard. At one time, in the run of the Parliament of 1859-65, Lord Palmerston being Premier, a rumour shook the political world, affirming the resignation of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr.
