The startling scandal, the rattling anecdote, the astounding leaps, and the amazing shots, afford for the moment a somewhat pleasing distraction, but when it is discovered that all these habitual flim-flams are, in general, the airy creatures of inaccuracy and exaggeration that the scandal is not true, the anecdote has no foundation, and that the feats and skill and strength are invested with the organic weakness of tradition, the vagaries lose something of the charm of novelty, and are almost as insipid as claret from which the bouquet has evaporated.

"My faith! I'd fling the twenty pound to the fishes. Aw, then, 'tis a poor price for my girl's love, and her innocent heart, and the proud content she once had in her own folk. Only fishers! but God's folk, for all that! But there! What be the use of talking? After Mr. Tresham's flim-flams, my words be only muddling folly." "I am going to bed, mother." "To be sure. Go your ways."

"There are going to be 'flim-flams," she shouted triumphantly. Then with a toss of the head "Short eating!" It had chanced that one day when the lonely pioneer had dined with his fellow-stationers he had remarked approvingly of certain dishes of French cookery acquired from her Grand'maman's receipts "I dunno what ye might call them flim-flams, Mrs. MacLeod, but they make powerful short eatin'."

I wonder you can put such flim-flams upon us, Sir: I do, I do. It does not become you, Sir: I say it, I say it. And my father was an honest tradesman, Sir: he dealt in malt and hops, Sir; and was a Corporation-man, Sir; and of the Church of England, Sir; and no Presbyterian, nor Ana Anabaptist, Sir; however you may be disposed to make honest people believe to the contrary, Sir.

As to the manner of my fall, that was concealed from me in favour to him who had been the occasion, and other flim-flams were invented. This long story of so light an accident would appear vain enough, were it not for the knowledge I have gained by it for my own use; for I do really find, that to get acquainted with death, needs no more but nearly to approach it.

"Here, none o' that," yelled Patrolman McDonogh quite reversing his earlier diagnosis of the situation. "None of your flim-flams, if you please. You go quiet and paceable with this gentleman. A little ride in the air is what you need." "That's right, officer," Sedyard interrupted. "That's how to talk to her. I can't do a thing with her." "Brute!" cried the emotional woman now happily restored.
