The very simplicity of the construction of the flues and air-chambers constitutes the chief danger, as the chances are that, unless the architect stands by and sees every joint made, the work will be done badly. Absolutely faultless workmanship must be employed throughout, and the fireclay materials must be literally of the very best and soundest description.

Fortunately no changes were made in the structure by its new owner. Not far from it you see the church and the vicarage, these also unmolested in their quiet age. Wanley, it is to be feared, lags far behind the times painfully so, when one knows for a certainty that the valley upon which it looks conceals treasures of coal, of ironstone blackband, to be technical and of fireclay.

To prevent the stove from wearing out rapidly, the firebox, in which the fuel is burned, is lined with a material, such as fireclay, that will withstand great heat. The fire in the firebox is supported by the grate, which is in the form of metal teeth or bars, so as to permit air to pass through the fuel from underneath.

'The bonfire's going pretty strong. We looked. It was. Great flames were rising to heaven against the evening sky. And we had left it,a smouldering flat heap. 'The clay must have caught alight, H. O. said. 'Perhaps it's the kind that burns. I know I've heard of fireclay. And there's another sort you can eat. 'Oh, shut up! Dicky said with anxious scorn. With one accord we turned back.

The main difficulties to be overcome are the heating of the bath, and the non-conduction of heat to places where it is not wanted. For elaborate baths, a small furnace wholly constructed of fireclay, such as that of which I have given complete plans in the chapter on "Heating and Ventilation," would be the best.

The junction of iron flue and heating apparatus is shown by a cast-iron cap sliding over a projecting rim of fireclay, moulded into the last quarry cover, similar to the way in which cast-iron mouthpieces are fitted to retorts. This heating apparatus is shown visible in the laconicum, but if thought desirable it could be screened by a wall of glazed bricks 9 in. and miss 4-1/2 in.

Since the conclusion of my experiments on the theoretical construction of burners, I have found that the high-power burners, previously described, are capable of heating a crucible equal in size to their own diameter to bright redness without the assistance of a chimney, provided the crucible is protected from draughts by a fireclay cylinder.

The most economical way of obtaining a high temperature in a small, inexpensive, and unpretentious private bath is by means of a common laundry stove, with a longer or shorter length of iron flue in the apartment. This is the cheapest and quickest method of raising the temperature of a room for sudorific purposes. It is constructed wholly of fireclay fireclay bricks, quarries, and cement.

The furnace should be built adjoining the laconicum, the partition wall being of 4-1/2-inch glazed brickwork, having a large number of small openings made therein by leaving void spaces as described further on for the fireclay heating apparatus.

For the highest temperatures air under pressure is a necessity, as we require a large quantity of gas burnt in as small a space as possible with the maximum speed, and given this air supply, we are very little hampered by conditions, as an explosive mixture may be blown through a gauze into a fireclay chamber, closed, except so far as is necessary to allow the escape or burnt gases.
